If we knew the earth was going to be destroyed by an impactor within three or four decades, wouldn't it make more sense to put everything we ("we" meaning all of humanity) have into colonizing the moon, mars, and other planets here in the solar system?

Or in developing the technology needed to deflect that big rock?

By comparison, Orion nuclear pulse ships to Alpha Centauri seem like a high-risk, low-payoff sort of option.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

If we were fully covinced we would likely plan several off planet ventures in parallel. While life at the mass center of a tiny asteroid is not very pleasent, I think it is most likely to succeed in a crash program with a DEADline in 30 years. Neil

While we're learning how to live on asteroids, we'd likely also develop subterranean living here on the home world.

I can't imagine that it'd be especially pleasant living a mile or so beneath the surface of the earth -- but there ain't no steenking impactor that's gonna get us there.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...
