The NASA audio feed of the post-Delta DVR Return to Flight Planning Update conference (whew!) is now running. It's scheduled to begin at 4 pm EDT (8pm GMT). No discussion yet.

The NASA media conference has been delayed for at least an hour.

If there's a lot of people posting on launch day, it could well happen!

You're right and they probably will.

Conference delayed for another half an hour. I hope this doesn't mean new problems.

Woohoo! I'm now a comet! Man, I was tired of being a rock.

Delayed to 6 pm EDT. I'm giving up. Clearly NASA has solved any problems with schedule pressure!

They seem to be doing comm checks with various news reporters at the moment, so I expect the conference will be starting fairly shortly.

I wonder who that woman was who interrupted earlier... "she looked SO pretty!" right in the middle of some technical discussion.

I take it the ECO sensor boxes are custom built as required then?

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Thanks for the ECO note, SG.

(STS-114: Discovery): I heard of an ECO point sensor box failure during testing 'this week'. That problem was then fixed by changing out the box and cables...ultimately pointing to the problem actually being with Orbiter wiring.

I'm also following up an apparent loosening of ECO sensor requirements from 4/4 to 3/4 being ok for launch. I know it used to be 3/4 before they upped the LCC to 4/4.

I've got to follow most of this back up...and also now the STS-121/300 info you've noted here...so please excuse my part-info above.

Hey SG, how do they load Hyper propellant? Are there ports for all the tanks?

Well having been at KSC since STS-1 thru the year 1992 it sure is nice to find this site. Yep ECO Sensor C/O was one on my duties along with everything else MPS/SSME does. I'm wondering if there are familiar folks here? I finally left USA when I blew out my back in a fall at Vandenberg AFB in 1999 (it's a long long story) but I was at KSC so long and wrote so many deevs the Techs started calling me Steve the DEEV! Actually Steve Hansell. I hung round with John Sterritt CPROP, presenterd post Challenger Level III OMRSD Changes to Dan Germany at JSC. Hung with NASA's Steve Minute, Dave King, and lots of other great engineers. So I am glad I found this site. I am retired unless a couple more back surgeries can fix me, otherwise my memeories of all the hard work (and my Divorce because of the long hours) are great memories and I know how each and everyone of you all give 100% everyday....lets get er done! I do have 23 successfull Launches, probably 50 + Tanking Tests with special JSC Bldg 45s from Phil Cota. In the end it was worth every minute! God Speed and if I sound familiar drop a line here or at stevehansell@hotmail.com. Anyone remember when we had to ghet NASA QC on GSE Devs!!!! boy those day were tough!

Go Discovery !!!

>It will be a topic because OV-104 must be ready to fly STS-300 if needed.<

I also wonder if this will be a topic for the Stafford-Covey RTF Task Group final meeting on Monday, seen as they are there to note completion of the CAIB requirements (of which an STS-300 is one of them).

So allow me to clarify this:

I have the FRR as "The FRR, held approximately two weeks prior to launch, is a comprehensive review of all activities/elements necessary for the safe and successful conduct of all operations from prelaunch through post–landing and recovery operations. The readiness of the Space Shuttle vehicle, flight crew, and payloads is determined at this review. A signed Certification of Flight Readiness endorsement certifies that all have successfully completed their Flight Preparation Processes."

So Discovery is ready by all intents and purposes, but Atlantis has to be projected as ready within that window for a potential - yet undesirable - STS-300, to complete the circle on the requirements for Discovery to launch, at which point the clock starts ticking for Atlantis to be ready.

You mentioned a potential two-week addition to OV-104's flow - does that break into this timeline? I'm not sure of the current progress of Atlantis' flow before the aforementioned ECO sensor box situation, such as contingency days remaining on her flow.

Is STS-300, for those who don't know, the back-up "rescue mission"?

Yes.

STS-121 - is Atlantis and the next Shuttle mission due for September.

However, following the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) report, STS-300 was installed.

STS-121 would switch to STS-300 should Discovery be found to have fatal damage to the Thermal Protection System (TPS) like Columbia suffered, for example.

Upon recognising (through the new video and scanning techniques) that damage had occured on assent, Discovery's Crew could take safe haven aboard the International Space Station (ISS) until Atlantis - with a crew of four - could be launched and sent up to bring them home.

This is where the timeline comes in, as they only have a set amount of days where they can stay up on the ISS.

There is also a similar requirement for STS-121...where Discovery would be the back-up STS-301. Then I believe the requirement is removed.

As SG noted, the requirement is now to have Atlantis ready to launch within 35 days of Discovery's launch.

A bit more here: (STS-300 crew talking:) http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?id=16

And a potential, future solution to trying to salvage the Orbiter in this senario: http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?id=26

All it is really is computers vote between themselves on decisions. I'm not sure where Kathryn got AI from, but I think she was trying to translate that there isn't a pilot holding on to a joystick and fighting with it on launches

We're not talking HAL from 2001

Have a look inside the flight deck, awesome picture:

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=1&photoid=2
