For the record, I just finished doing some number crunching wrt the NASA Astronaut Corps.<p>There are 321 names listed as Career Astronauts, this is all the people who were ever employed by NASA as Astronauts. It does not include Payload Specialists or representatives of other space programs.<p>Of those 36 are dead, and 131 are retired.<p>Of the 153 who are currently employed, 45 are "Management Astronauts" (semi-retired, holding other jobs within NASA) and 98 are active in the Corps. There are 10 astronaut candidates (the class of 2004).<p>Of that 153, 69 are either active-service or in the reserves. This means that 45% of the active Astronaut Corps is military.<p>If stevehw33 or anyone else wants to check the numbers, the astronaut handbook can be found here. <hr width="10%" />Yes, I know there's one 'extra' astronaut floating around - I'm not sure if he/she is active or retired. Even if you assume active and military it doesn't change the numbers much: 45.45% versus 45.09% military).</p></p></p></p></p>
