SG, I just heard that the shuttle goes through "Dramatic pitch changes" when she is bleeding off speed on the return to earth--something like 90 degrees one way, then dramatically pitching the other way as well.

Are these pitch changes manually controlled or computer? and finally, is it POSSIBLE to fly the orbiter to touchdown without a computer?

Btw-Thanks for all the insight!

not all of us, some of us remember how these rusty waste of money have killed 14 astronauts due to because of mistakes. 2 1/2 years and they still can't get it right = more deaths all to keep jeb bush keeping those useless people working on these death traps. its disgusting and i no lots of people agree on here.

"did u call people dumbass just before nasa killed seven on challenger and then another seven on columbia?"

Irrelevant. People here and now are calling you dumbass, and for a very good reason I might add. Stfu and go trolling some place else.

If you had any couth, you would know that to talk of a crash and the resulting deaths when everyone in this community is concerned about the current landing is bad form, to say the least. The last re-entry is foremost and in the mind of everyone at NASA as well as here.

Answers... Answers... Well, gee, what would you have me say to infantile trolling nonsense?! You are obviously one of those below-25 year old people who grew up in a time when you could sit smug behind a keyboard and spout nonsense in relative anonymity. The cowardice of this day and age, shown by young punks who don't have a brain to---

ENOUGH, ENOUGH!!! This is a tense time and I'll not get into a flame war of wits with unarmed persons.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

DEORBIT BURN IGNITION. Flying upside down and backwards 205 miles above the western Indian Ocean, Discovery has begun the deorbit burn. The firing of the twin orbital maneuvering system engines on the tail of the shuttle will last two minutes and 42 seconds, slowing the craft to slip from orbit. The retro-burn will send Discovery to Edwards Air Force Base in California for a touchdown at 8:11 a.m. EDT.
