SG, you mentioned that the SCA can no longer release the Shuttle while in flight ... I assume this ability was removed following the Drop Tests of Enterprise.

Iguess it makes sense ... seperating a Shuttle in an emergency would:

A) be just as complex as before except the Shuttle would be unmanned this time

B) it would result in an unmanned (and uncontrolled) Shuttle plumetting to the ground and (potentially) creating more collateral damage than the SCA/Shuttle combo would ... ie, two crash sites instead of just one.

Am I on target?

and then there is the case of The Dave Mathews Band and their tour bus, quite literally, dumping their, uhmmm, matter into the Chicago River ... and onto a passing tour boat.

and so somehow we're back on-topic to the MLPM and the lucky guys that get to open it.

and where *does* all that material *go* once it is offloaded? The local landfill?

Sorry george, I was rather obtuse with my comment I guess. Radar made the general observations about Blinky Griffin that he is a basically a straight shooter and that he hopes Griffin's candor doesn't get him into trouble.

I considered his penchant for unabashed honesty in answering questions for a moment, and put that together with one of the universal questions wives/girlfriends like to ask of us. Namely, do they look good in <insert item here />?

QED, my earlier comment.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

In reply to:

Perhaps so, I hope to find out some day. This refers to our Florida beach !

Sorry SG, just having a little joke with myself again. My intimation about Cocoa Beach being close to NZ was just a little wishful thinking on my part. You mentioned the SCA would be doing a fly-around, presumably so that folks can enjoy the sight of Discovery in their skies.

As I say, I was just 'wishful thinking out loud' that it would be nice if Cocoa Beach was just down the coast from NZ, so we could enjoy seeing Discovery in our skies also.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

"The Shuttle's flight and refueling stops depend on weather along the route. Weather restrictions may cause unexpected changes to the flight path and arrival delays."

Yep, pretty much what SG said.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

From the NASA RTF site:

The pair will make a refueling stop at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma and then, weather permitting, continue on to an overnight stop at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Arrival at Kennedy is expected late Saturday morning.

"They just assist the hydraulic actuators in closing the Nose gear doors."

Yeah sure. Thats what you tell the public, but I know the truth. You guys probably use duck tape to hold the doors shut once you get them up there too....

-eric

"...an overnight stop at Barksdale Air Force Base..."

Dang -- I used to live at Barksdale when my father was in the Air Force. He was the Deputy Commander of Maintenance for the base -- could have gotten me ringside seats to the landing. Mind you this was... lesse... about two years before the shuttle first flew. Nevertheless, an interesting thought given an alternate timeline.

Barksdale, La..... Wait I live in Louisiana. I wonder how far away it is from Baton Rouge and weather it would do any good to drive out there after work.

Ok after a little research I discovered that Barksdale is near Shreveport La. The opposite end of the state from me. Oh well. One day I will get to see the shuttle.
