Antelope Valley has been getting some pretty nasty afternoon thunderstorms over the past month. Lost power early this morning in Canyon Country and was still out when I left for work. Severe thunderstorm warning for San Berdoo County and desert till tonight.

Ooops, I didn't count my zeros, it was supposed to be 10,000, which was not right either, but it was funny at the time - to me anyway - oh well, I got another post out of it...

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Is it me, or are there a hell of a lot of "opinion columns" in the papers over the last 24 hours calling for the end of the fleet (as in end it now)?

I swear some people are like sheep. AP runs a negative story and everyone follows. Very annoying.

"The engineer noticed something wrong, but was told the TC knew what she was doing, and to keep his mouth shut!" or words to that effect.

And is the person who told the engineer to keeep his mouth shut still employed there? Seems like that is exactly one of the attitudes that bought us both "Challenger" and "Columbia"! :mad

Ad Luna! Ad Aries! Ad Astra!

najaB,

Am I reading you post correctly? The protocol for an engine out on the SCA (loaded with Shuttle) was to *bail out* of the aircraft? Essentially abandoning the SCA/Shuttle for an uncontrolled ... um ... landing?
I hope the poor weather at EAFB doesn't continune much longer.. although if they delay the transfer for another few days I might get a chance to see them land!

I hope you guys are too; when that bird comes back, I'm afraid you're going to seriously need that sense of humor. (Hail damage in the Mohave Desert? Wow.)

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

So the potential exists that it might pass this way Thurday/Friday, depending on the flight path.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

In reply to:

Many people think it never rains in the desert.

Oh I know it does rain. It's just not quite as common an event as in, say, Florida. That's why it's so popular for flight research; weather is usually good. And for the rain to come with such violence!

It does almost seem like a conspiracy of nature. The worst possible time for it to rain, and it does.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Stupid question, I'm sure...but why isn't there a hanger that they could roll Discovery into, do some processing, when ready to mate with the SCA, tow her out?

Most likely you would not want to put her into an enclosed or covered space due to propellants residule after landing.
