SDC : Astronauts Deliver Moving Van to Space Station

HOUSTON – Astronauts moved a cargo module the size of a mini bus the short distance from space shuttle Discovery's payload bay to the International Space Station's (ISS) Harmony node Thursday morning, setting the stage for a carefully choreographed ballet to begin transferring tons of supplies and equipment to and from and the orbiting laboratory.

The space station special delivery was performed by STS-131 mission specialists Stephanie Wilson and Naoko Yamazaki, Japan's second female astronaut, who as the shuttle crew's loadmaster -- or cargo chief -- will oversee the nearly 120 hours of transfer work.

Two space shuttle astronauts will exit the International Space Station early Friday to complete the first of three spacewalks planned for their mission.

The spaceflyers plan to prepare a giant tank of ammonia, used for coolant on the space station, to be installed on the backbone-like truss of the orbiting lab.

STS-131 mission specialists Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson will step out of the spacecraft at 1:41 a.m. EDT (0541 GMT) to begin a six-and-a-half-hour excursion.

Shuttle Astronauts Take Mission's First Spacewalk

Two astronauts floated outside the International Space Station early Friday to begin the tricky task of replacing a large, old ammonia tank on the orbiting laboratory's hull.

Discovery shuttle astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson had to use a pry bar to pull the new ammonia tank off its mooring in Discovery's payload bay after it got stuck. But after that, its move to a temporary storage point on the station went smoothly.

"Clay, you did a great job holding that tank steady," the astronauts said.

The spacewalkers spent 6 1/2 hours working outside the station to disconnect an empty ammonia tank on the station and prepare its replacement for installation on a later spacewalk. It was the first of three spacewalks planned for their mission.

SDC : NASA Extends Space Shuttle Mission By One Day
By Tariq Malik
SPACE.com Managing Editor
posted: 10 April 2010

Astronauts on the linked shuttle Discovery and space station tackled a mountain of cargo delivery work overnight Friday after getting an extra day added to their mission due to an antenna failure.

Mission Control decided to extend Discovery's 13-day mission by one extra day so the astronauts could use the space station's main antenna later in their flight to send home the results of a standard heat shield inspection since their own shuttle antenna is broken. Discovery is now slated to land in Florida on April 19 after a two-week flight.

Space station flight director Ed Van Cise said the decision allows Discovery's crew time to inspect their heat shield without sacrificing any of their remaining mission goals. Those goals include two more spacewalks and moving nearly 8 tons of cargo into the station while packing tons of trash and unneeded items up for the trip back to Earth.

This story was updated at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Astronauts on International Space Station and shuttle Discovery tackled a mountain of cargo delivery work early Saturday after getting an extra day added to their mission due to an antenna failure.

"Most of our day, a lot of us were involved in doing transfer, which is a lot like moving," teacher-turned-astronaut Dorothy "Dottie" Metcalf-Lindenburger told Mission Control as the day wound down.

SDC : Astronauts Tackle Tough Ammonia Tank Swap in Second Spacewalk

HOUSTON – Two astronauts battled with a stubborn bolt early Sunday while hooking up a massive new ammonia coolant tank outside the International Space Station during the second of three spacewalks dedicated to the in-space maintenance chore.

Discovery shuttle astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson ventured outside the station's Quest airlock at 1:30 a.m. EDT (0530 GMT) filled with confidence for what turned out to be a 7 1/2-hour service call on the orbiting lab.

Astronauts Mark Space Anniversaries As Shuttle Retirement Looms
By Tariq Malik

The 13 astronauts aboard the linked shuttle Discovery and space station marked the twin anniversaries of the birth of human spaceflight and NASA's space shuttle fleet Monday, even as the U.S. space agency is winding down its reusable space plane program.

Discovery has been docked at the space station since last week as its crew hauls tons of cargo into the station. The first-ever shuttle mission, STS-1 aboard Columbia, launched 29 years ago today, exactly two decades after the former Soviet Union inaugurated the era of human spaceflight with the launch of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit in 1961.

Now, NASA plans to launch just three more shuttle flights after this one before retiring the three-orbiter fleet in September. To date, 131 shuttle missions – including Discovery's – have launched into space.
