Whats the downlink data speed of the Ku-band antenna.
The data rate mut be good to transfer 40.0gig of data.
Also does it go straight down to ground based antenna or a Satellite first.

If not in line of sight to ground it goes thru TDRS, Tracking and Data Relay Sat net.
I won't quote transfer rate.

Thanks

Just found this out
The Ku-band antenna has a The IRCS communications system has data rate capacity for 216 kbps in the uplink and 50 Mbps in the downlink mode.

What confused me was here in the US we use 00:00:00 instead of 00-00-00, and also, it wasn't clear that it was MET. Thanx.

Timing on this mission is pretty good for me as they are waking up about the time I sit down to dinner.

Ben Cooper got some real nice shots. I'll have to ask him from where and with what.

SDC : Dazzling Photo: Space Station Flies Through Big Space Storm
By SPACE.com Staff

osted: 06 April 2010

An astronaut has captured the rare view of the International Space Station zooming through a dazzling display of Earth's aurora as the strongest geomagnetic storm of the year hit the planet.

In the stunning space aurora photo, the International Space Station is seen flying 220 miles (354 km) over an Earth lit up by eerie green auroras peppered by red hues. A Russian Soyuz spacecraft is backlit by the cosmic light show in the image.

Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi took the stunning photo and posted it Monday on Twitter, where he has been chronicling his six-month mission to the space station under the name Astro_Soichi [more aurora photos].

Crew Completes Inspection
Tue, 06 Apr 2010 03:22:43 PM GMT

After completing a standard inspection of space shuttle Discovery's heat shield, the shuttle crew goes to sleep at 12:21 p.m. EDT. Due to the Ku-band anomaly, data from the scan was recorded for playback to imagery experts in mission control after Discovery docks to the International Space Station. The Mission Management Team (MMT) meets at 2 p.m., and NASA TV will air a post-MMT news conference at 5 p.m.

SDC : Shuttle Discovery Docks at Space Station (now i noticed)

The shuttle Discovery linked up to the International Space Station early Wednesday, bringing 13 people together on two different spaceships – including the largest orbital gathering of female astronauts in history.

Discovery docked at the space station at 3:44 a.m. EDT (0744 GMT) in a flawless orbital rendezvous despite the failure of a main antenna dish usually used to provide radar data during shuttle approaches. The shuttle is hauling tons of fresh supplies and equipment for astronauts living on the nearly complete station.

"Houston and station, capture confirmed," Discovery commander Alan Poindexter said. The two spaceships were flying in darkness 215 miles (346 km) over the Caribbean sea at the time.

A "flat" paper doll, a freshly-baked batch of wedding cookies, a cartoon dog, and patches inscribed with a sci-fi alien language are packed among 17,000 pounds of science experiments, equipment and supplies that were delivered by space shuttle Discovery early Wednesday to the International Space Station (ISS).

Lighting the predawn sky as it lifted off on Monday at 6:21 a.m. EDT (1021 GMT), Discovery launched the STS-131 crew on a 13-day mission to the orbiting laboratory, where they'll perform three spacewalks and move equipment into and out of a moving van module called Leonardo. Led by commander Alan Poindexter, Discovery's crew arrived at the station at 3:44 a.m. EDT (0744 GMT) Wednesday.

The seven astronauts — the shuttle's last full contingent as the fleet's remaining three planned missions are set to fly with one empty seat each — have packed on Discovery mementos and creature comforts to bring a bit of home to the station. They'll return to Earth with many of the same souvenirs to share space with those on the ground.

Astronauts Making Big Delivery at Space Station

It's moving day at the International Space Station, where shuttle astronauts are delivering a cargo module the size of a small bus packed with tons of fresh supplies and equipment.

The shuttle Discovery and a crew of seven astronauts arrived at the space station early Wednesday hauling an Italian-built cargo pod filled with 17,000 pounds (7,711 kg) of spare parts and equipment for the station's crew.

Together, all 13 astronauts on the linked shuttle and space station will use the orbiting laboratory's Canadian-built robotic arm to pluck the cargo pod – called Leonardo – out of Discovery's payload bay and attach it to the station.
