Undocking Day for Shuttle and Station
Fri, 19 Feb 2010 08:25:18 PM GMT

The crew of space shuttle Endeavour awoke at 3:15 p.m. EST to the song “In Wonder” by Newsboys, played for Pilot Terry Virts.

The crews of the shuttle and International Space Station are making preparations for Endeavour to undock at 7:54 p.m. After initial spacecraft separation, Virts will take control of Endeavour’s stick for a fly around of the station. Later, the shuttle crew will unberth the orbiter boom sensor system for a “late inspection” scan of the shuttle’s heat shield.

Endeavour Undocks From International Space Station
Sat, 20 Feb 2010 01:03:09 AM GMT

While flying 208 miles above the Atlantic Ocean west of Mauritania and the western Sahara, space shuttle Endeavour undocked from the International Space Station at 7:54 p.m. EST, nine days, 19 hours and 48 minutes after docking on Feb. 10. Shuttle pilot Terry Virts will grab the stick and perform a fly-around of the station, enabling his crewmates to conduct a photo survey of the complex. The station now is 98 percent complete by volume, 90 percent by mass.

Weather permitting, the deorbit burn is planned for 9:13 p.m. Sunday, leading to a landing at 10:16 p.m. at Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility.

NASA Television will air a Mission Status Briefing at 1:30 a.m. to discuss the progress of the STS-130 mission.

Hi Orienteer,

It's best to actually check out Heaven's Above or search one of the other sites Joe mentions to get viewing information tailored for your specific location:

http://www.heavens-above.com/

The times and sky locations are different based on viewer location and latitude, but those sites will tell you exactly where to look and when and for how long.

Hope that helps and cheers,

Just a quick note, the NASA "sightings" site for the ISS has been updated with the new orbit.

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/si ... index.html

Heavens-Above hasn't been yet. Very little change, other than for me, it eliminated the second of two early morning passes tomorrow morning. I suspect it slid too close to sunrise. The timing went a minute or so later, and elevation didn't change much.

Meanwhile, the Heavens-Above site lists daytime ISS passes as well; this one for me at 6:38 Am should be easily visible in the "daytime" sky. It's about 10 minutes before sunrise, so with a 60 degree pass (so the ISS should be at least -2 Mag) I should have no trouble spotting it, clouds permitting.

Just witnessed the best twin pass I've ever seen in the history of the shuttle program. Endeavour was about 5 degrees (half a fist width) ahead of the ISS as they gracefully passed about 25 degrees above the northern horizon. I called my friend about 4 minutes before (not too many friends you can call at 5:15 AM!) and he got so see it too :)

I'm going to try and spot the ISS after sunrise this morning. And, armed with the knowledge of exactly how far ahead Endeavour is, I'm going to try and spot it with binoculars. For those futher west (I'm in NJ) in the US, there should be a good pass of both craft together in darker skies...if you're awake, don't miss it!!

Endeavour Landing Times Updated
Sun, 21 Feb 2010 04:19:19 AM GMT

STS-130 mission managers opted to forego a planned orbit adjust burn, changing space shuttle Endeavour's deorbit and landing times by a few minutes.

Weather permitting, Endeavour's deorbit burn will occur at 9:14 p.m. EST Sunday, leading to a landing at Kennedy Space Center at 10:20 p.m. There is a second Kennedy landing opportunity at 11:55 p.m. There also are two opportunities at Edwards Air Force Base in California early Monday at 1:25 a.m. and 3 a.m. Ground tracks for Endeavour's landing opportunities are posted on NASA's Web:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shutt ... nding.html

Forecasters are predicting a chance of showers within 30 nautical miles of Kennedy's shuttle landing facility and a cloud ceiling at 6,000 feet, both violations of landing flight rules. The forecast for Edwards also predicts violations for showers within 30 nautical miles of the runway and low cloud ceilings.

Earlier today, Endeavour's astronauts completed the standard day-before-entry checkout of the shuttle's flight control systems and reaction control system jets. Norm Knight, STS-130 entry flight director, will brief reporters on the status of Endeavour's landing preparations at 1:30 a.m. Sunday on NASA Television.

Good pass of the shuttle and ISS this morning, more typical of what I see most of the time. The shuttle was about 2 or 3 minutes ahead. Today's guest was the newspaper guy ( who is always shocked to see me taking the paper by hand at 5:40 AM, but shouldn't be...it's when I get home from meteor observing many mornings :) ) I got to show him the shuttle in the southeast as the ISS was nearly overhead. Got a nice -4 flare from the ISS at about 40 degrees elevaion in the east; probably from the solar arrays.
