I thought this very special photo mosaic deserved a thread of its own, so people will look.

From today's APOD. Be sure to click on the original and download the high resolution image.

rings

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.

like your pic better

found two moons without reading the description and only after having been told by it I found the third one at 8'clock

it is a bit confusing though, I take it the rings are lighted from underneath and their shadow is above equator but it looks like they are lit from above - actually I take it every little bit of bodies that make up the rings is lighted as 'crescent', same as the planet is and what we see is the multitude of those lighted crescents which together show up as rings and that would explain why the rings are lit up even if the light comes from underneath them and normally one would expect them to come out looking dark

the shadow of Saturn on the ringbelt seems to be too small given the light comes from underneath but I suppose that's in the eye of the beholder

anyone around who has monitor big enough to make wallpaper of the large image unreduced in size and have it all visible?
times like these make me feel my 24" is outdated, time to look for something bigger

vanDivX

Hi vanDivX.

Yes, the rings are illuminated from 'behind' i.e backlit. This view is looking down onto the Winter
Northern hemispheres of Saturn, rings & moons.

More news here related to the rings of Saturn here from NASA / JPL Planetary Photojournal.

Saturn rings in closeup & Antares / Alpha Scorpii from Cassini.

Titan & Saturn.

Irridescence on Saturn's rings.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
