Interesting.

I read another book whose title eludes me for the moment. In that episode, a people from a planet whose form is basically that of an "intelligent raptor" go through the guardian, and keep the dinosaurs from being wiped out on Earth.

This has a lot of impacts - humanity does not arise, the federation isn't formed ....

The Enterprise is performing an experiment at the time of the change of the timeline with a new type of "warp shield" that protects them from the change, so they end up working the timeline back out...

I found it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0671520458/102-1208336-1594553?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

You reminded me of a Star Trek book I've read in the past. It was called, (I think), "Yesterday's Child." It was about the time that Spock went back in time of that world to that ice cave that he was stranded in with the girl. She had his child after he left, and he had to confront and get to know that son he left behind. A pretty good book as I remember it.

No one has mentioned two relatively recent but interesting time travel movies, Timescape and Frequency.

Several Dr Who episodes are also worth mentioning, but haven't been. City of Death, Genesis of the Daleks, and Pyramid of Mars all deal with the consequencies of meddling in time.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

I read that book a long time ago. I don't think I have it anymore though....

not time travle but still an interesting series of books from Hogan, 'Inherit the Stars', 'The Gentle Giants of Ganymede' and 'Giants Star', there is a 4th book which came out later but I cant remember what its called right now and I didn't think much of it.

The basic story starts out sometime around 2025 or so with a United Earth Space Programm finding a space suited corpse of a human on the moon while surveying for a new base - the corpse being 50,000 years old....

For a fun difference, there was an espisode of the Lost In Space TV series in which it was revealed that if Dr. Smith had not come aboard the Jupiter 2, it would have been destroyed by an uncharted asteroid.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

I loved Irwin Allen stuff as a kid, and as an adult.

And of course, continuing in the LIS vein, there was another time travel episode in which, through a time warp, the Jupiter 2 goes back in time to the - 50's I think - and becomes the true genesis of the term "flying saucer"

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

This is obscure. I don't remember if it was Mack Reynolds or Hogan, but it was called (IIRC) "The Chaos Weapon." It was about a race (also humans) that was trying to flee their universe that was about to become a "Big Crunch." They were killing off the geniuses and movers/shakers of our (future) universe, using a weapon that altered entropy and chaos. If you had a possibility of getting into a car accident, their weapon would cause the crash to become imminent, unavoidable, and huge rather than tiny.

The weapon was powered by multiple singularities and located in a "space" between our two universes. And the hero had an ethereal, multi-dimensional partner that lived attached to his shoulder.

Ring a bell, anyone?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Doesn't ring a bell, but maybe I had my bell rang to many times.

Oh yeah, there was an episode of "Twilight Zone" in which the protagonists accidentally slip into the realm between times, and get to see what happens to keep time and things going.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Mmm.

Harry Turtledove's most excellent book, "The Guns of the South." And S.M. Stirling's series, "The Domination (of the Draka)." Superior fiction, both. IMNSHO.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Another intresting book is 'The Foresight War' by Tony Williams

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0755201566/qid%3D1132525315/026-1087484-2710056

I know its well researched cos I'm on some of the boards where some of the changes mentioned have been talked about (several times in some cases - e.g. reusing the 15" guns from the WW1 Royal Soverign class battleships on the 1936 King George V class rather than develop the 14" from scratch so saving a lot of time and money but still getting a gun with superior characteristics).

Tony also has this rather good website.

http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/

I saw that one. That was cool. A whole army of people existing between seconds purely to move things around a bit so that when time restarts for the next second, it's all moved.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

There was also either a "Twilight Zone" show or something like that in which a couple get caught inbetween time and find the mechanics were dressed in blue and phyically moved things for the next second. They were told they could not leave, but did find a way to escape, naturally. It was kind of fun to watch.

Yevaud,
I've heard that from others as well. It looks like I am going to have to break down and get one of his books.
Which Harry Turtledove book would be best to start with anyway? I do like alternate history and time travel.

Dr. Wayne, I just read your post about the mechanic of time or whatever, so it was a twillight zone show.

Yevaud,
Just re-read your post, would the book listed be the best to start with? He has many that I have seen. Also, what is this "imnsho" or whatever those letters are?

P.S. Do extra frequent flier miles come with all these extra postings?

If we are ging to move to time travel books, neither the original Time machine" by Wells or Asimov's "The end of Eternity" have been surpassed.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

One quirky aspect of time travel stories: bizarre romantic entanglements.

Remember in "Back to the Future," when Michael J. Fox's character goes back to the 1950s -- and has to come to grips with the fact that his mother has become... well... sort of interested in him?

Things could get really wierd, really fast.

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...
