I read Wrinkle in Time in the same grade (3rd or 4th). And found a copy of it roughly 20 years ago. I'm rather more familiar with that one than WFTTMP.

I also saw the (fairly poor) TV movie of the week treatment Wrinkle received.

I have no idea what became of me copy of WFTTMP, think it was a scholastic book order, but it may have been a birthday gift too.

Hell to get old.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I'm with avaunt. I have always liked the Liberator from Blake's 7. Good looks, fast, transporters and a great computer. I can't stop thinking they must have made it out of a lamp or something; but it seemed like a pretty good ship.

I vote for the Tardis as the coolest and the Membari Cruiser as the hottest but there is lots to like in this collection.
Let's not leave out this bad boy from Independence Day!

The alien ships in Independence Day were way cool. But my top vote goes to Star Trek DS9's Defiant. Talk about kicking butt and taking names...

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

It was pretty cool, in a Borg sorta way.

I like Mini-vans too but a '56 T-bird has what I call style.

I'm thinking that the Defiant would fly loop-de-loops around your basic Star Destroyer -- and blast it out of the sky.

The things are huge -- like aircraft carriers. And they have the same basic mobility as aircraft carriers. They just sort of sit there, depending mainly on fighter protection for their defense. Although, they DO look cool while they're sitting there.

So in a fight, expect the Defiant to send a few photon torpedoes right up the aft end (which is to say, the butt) of a Star Destroyer. End of story.

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

very true, cinematography adds a lot to the impact of science fiction imagery. your example of the star destroyer is classic

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

I was 17 (or so) when the first Star Wars movie came out -- and you're right. I am 45 now, and I can still conjure on demand the mental image of that Star Destroyer in the opening credits.

It was a beautifully done bit of cinema. The Star Destroyer was a truly impressive looking ship -- I remember holding my breath in that dark theater almost three decades ago as it seemed like the ship would just continue on forever.

But the Defiant would still kick its ass.

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

"How a ship is introduced in a movie makes a big difference to me."

I can agree with that. I will say that my favourite ship in a sci-fi series would have to be the Firefly class ship "Serenity". It had three introductions and each of them was unique.

In the original series we see it hidden away at first in the junk of an abandoned and ripped up spaceship, you can't even tell the difference between it and it's surrounding. When finally they have to make a quick get away we see it drifting away from the wrack and it's distinctive engine coming to life aglow in green when finally it explodes and the ship zooms off.

In the second "pilot" episode "Train Job" we are introduced to the ship when our crew is pushed to the edge of a cliff by an angry mob. At the last second Serenity flies up from beyond the cliff and fills the screen, the pilot threatens the mob saying he'll blow a "another crater in this moon" and they back down. Of course Serenity has no weapons, another reason why the ship is so cool.

The third introduction is in the movie Serenity, we start out the movie with the Serenity logo painted on the side of the ship and we slowly back away and circle the ship giving the audience a good view of the whole thing, it is quiet in space, but we can see that the underside of the ship is slowly starting to glow and the two engines on each side are rotating in to position, suddenly the violence of an atmospheric rentry explodes in fire and sound and we settle our view on the front windows where we can see the captain and his pilot. Next thing we know are inside the ship, and at this point we have only seen half of the ship, for the next four and a half minutes we are treated to a one-shot where we are not only introduced to the entire crew of the Serenity, but we get to see the whole of the inside of the ship!

&%$#@! &%$#@!="http://www.feoamante.com/FeoNews/articles/FireFly/images/serenity_1152.jpg" />

I have to

I like the Pegasus (and Galactica) configurations from the new BSG series much more so than the original designs. The old ones looked too weak and unrealistic.

13 when my mum AND MY DAD ! (wonderment above amazement) took us to see Starwars.

I will never forget the buzzing in my ears, when we went out of the theatre, got into the car, and drove home. My twin and I buckled on our seatbelts/tony climbs down the ladder into the gunport cockpit, settling
into one of the two main laser cannons mounted in large rotating turrets on either side of the ship.

Hahahaha.
I have never clicked on a seatbelt again in my life, without remembering that night.

The first Star Wars movie ("Episode IV") came out during the summer between my junior and senior years in high school.

The question, "Was Lampblack a lady's man in high school?" can be put to rest with this one little datum: I saw the movie seven times that summer. Unaccompanied.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

I forgot the most important part of the post:

I had never seen -- nor have I since seen -- anything to compare with that opening shot of the Imperial battleship. The thing just went on forever, and there is nothing cooler anywhere -- in any universe.

Although, one-on-one it could probably be taken out by a Federation shuttle craft.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...
