Total Lunar Eclipse of March 2007 is over

Just a reminder, tonight is a total lunar eclipse. The penumbral phase (barely noticeable) has just started. The umbral phase starts at 21:30 UT Totality starts at 22:44 UT (5:44 EST), hence for most the US East coast the moon will rise in totality. Total eclipse ends 23:58 UT. Umbral phase ends 01:12 UT. The umbral phase has just just started. This will be visible as a tiny dark crescent creeping across the moon. Should be visible anywhere east of the Atlantic....up to western Australia and Viet Nam; further east than that the moon has set. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> But the Krell forgot one thing John. My husband and I saw the Eclipse very well here in Manchester, UK... The sky was clear and the moon had a dull reddish/orangey glow. Through the finder scope it looked a bit like Mars! We saw Saturn with the naked eye as well so had a brief look at that too <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> I'll get my husband (5billionyearslater) to put a piccy up <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" />

Last nights viewing certainly was terrific! We have an 8" Newtonian Reflector and Sony Cyber-Shot digital camera. We used a 25mm eyepiece which produced an f/5 but the camera is an f/6. Pictures were rather dull, but here is one of them....

My girlfriend and I went out to watch the eclipse. I set up my digital camcorder to record it but it was my first attempt & I bet more than a few of you can guess at how well that went. I was looking hard for it and it paid off because it was only totally eclipsed for a very short time after moonrise here. We sat outside and recorded as much as we could though. Now I'm on a quest to find out how I can make a better effort at recording objects in the night sky, I just hope it doesn't mean having to buy a new camera. I'm using a Canon ZR85 in case someone wants to PM me some ideas.

I guess it really depends on how serious you are about astronomy. If you would like to take it up as a hobby, you almost certainly have to get a telescope and SLR camera (Single Lens Reflex) However, it is worth noting that if you want to image stars and other deep sky objects, you will need a camera that has a manual exposure time as it takes a good bit longer to "capture" deep sky objects and stars. Planets can be photographed with a camera or even a webcam.

Well, I don't want to buy a new Video Camera. When it comes to an SLR, I'm having a hard time finding one that isn't digital. I don't think I have the budget to get a DSLR & a telescpoe. I'm not sure where to find an older SLR with no electronics at all. I think some of the older SLR's have something for shutters called a B setting that lets the lens focuses on infinity, and you can set the aperture diaphragm yourself.

from winnipeg eclipse was ending as moon rose so half hour after moon rise it was back to just plain ol full moon
