I used to be into astronomy a bit when I was younger. I read about the Leonid shower recently and wanted to give some youngins in my life a small, hopefully fascinating, introduction to it tomorrow night during the peak. Which direction in the night sky should everyone be looking from Central Florida? Thanks.

stuey, there's a thread in Space Science and Astronomy (started by moi ) with a discussion of the Leonids.
For a quick answer to your question, no particular direction, whichever part of the sky is the darkest From North through East to South.

The bad news is Leonids are not visible before 11PM, so everybody take a nap early (like I do) then go out later. The later the better.

Meteor Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. Nope, that would be 11PM central as well.
Since the time zones are based on the earth's rotation, the time that the radiant rises pretty much stays the same, + or - the width of the time zone.
If you give me a general location I can look up the exact time.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. OK, for you the radiant rises about 11:15 PM.
That means that at the time of the possible Leonid enhancement on Saturday night (11:45-00:15) you might see <~ 10% of the ZHR, depending on how dark your sky is. If the ZHR turns out to be 100, you could see 10 per hour, or one every 6 minutes ON AVERAGE. The Taurids will also give you a few per hour (of very slow meteors) during that same period. Of course, these are predictions, not facts. That's what I like about meteor showers. Sometimes forecasts are good, sometimes not. For example, this year's Orionids, in mid October produced rates 3 times what was expected. So you never know unless you look!

Good luck, hope the skies are clear!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. By the way the next one is the Geminids, probably the best annual shower of the year in mid December. Hourly rates are reliably over 100 per hour, and because the radiant is high in the sky, we get to see a large percentage of that.
I'll post in Space Science and Astronomy when it gets close.

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Hope you're not Blazin when you're watching for meteors. You'll ruin my night vision

But the Krell forgot one thing John. That's why there are dampers, keep the fire smoldering, then add some oxygen and Boingo!

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
