Look at some of those freakish extremophiles. Some of them breath hydrogen and metabolize uranium, if I'm not mistaken.

No argument there. I was referring to life as we don't know it.

Quoting from "Jurassic Park": Life finds a way.

Maybe if we're lucky, the filmmakers will use a known solar system as the home of the alien invaders.

We only scratched the surface of Mars. What if the martians came from below the surface? Maybe they are pissed off because we invaded their turf? Maybe the Vikings weren't so clean and gave them a bug which killed thousands. Maybe they are attacking out of self defense?

Now what a grand seat all the orbiters would have as strange volcanic plumes released fast flying objects towards the earth. Simultaneously, the Spirit and Odysey stopped sending telemetry. A mystery until the fireballs streak through the skies with no radar returns.

That's the angle I'm trying to get at - that the plot line won't fly today, keeping true to the original film and/or book.

Didn't stop people making Ben Hur, or Gibsons bloody Christ movie. Or Godzilla.

Or king kong.

I think you are confused, mate. It is going to be a STORY. Like any other STORY , it is going to be judged on something OTHER than how it represents the actual world.

When the prolog says " In a Galaxy Far far Away" you don't think they MEAN IT, do you?.

You confuse me, you seem to be an adult but why would you say something like "that the plot line won't fly today, keeping true to the original film and/or book.".

It is a FILM. Fiction.

Case in point: The Sum of All Fears. Baltimore was blown up by a nuke. But when I drive through Baltimore, it's still there.

Likewise, if I see London wiped out in 1899 in a movie, I don't leave the theater wondering "But that didn't happen!!!"

The 'Sum of All Fears' was definately 'first rate' !

So long as Spielberg omits using terms like - 'Heat Ray' or 'Invaders from the planet Mars' !!

Avaunt />>
It is a FILM. Ever see the flake series "War of the Worlds" that aired a few decades ago? I think it had Jekote starring in it. They explained the previous WW invasions (1959, 189x) as having been forgotten by some kind of mass hysteria. I felt sooo ripped off by that series I was glad when they s*it canned it.

I suspect this one will be a fast scene changing, loud, darkly lit, lots of shooting, formula flick. I would really love to see the original PERFECT to Wells. You could easilly explain the historical lack of memory as being the news of the day turned into Well's book. Not accurate, but therin lay the modern fiction - "Wells wrote history".

Caught a teaser trailer on at the cinema this week, got me all excited but you didn't see anything much (no aliens or walking machines) but the voiceover was the bit from the start of the book.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. Hope it's not too similar to Independence Day. That one was , granted, fun to watch, but plot was pretty much derived from WW, anyhow. Just crave new ideas and experiences.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Spielberg is probably the best sci-fi director out there. ET, Close Encounters, Minority Report, AI...loved them all. I think he knows what he's doing. He'll treat HG Well's story with respect, but give an epic twist to it. I can't wait for this one to be released. The trailer is very good.

***

Thanks for the link. Is it too early to be excited?
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.

Oh yeah, I was going to ask if anyone cared to speculate on the "They're already here" tag line.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.

I saw a trailer in a Super Bowl ad. It looked great except that Tom Cruise was in it.

Flynn,

I just saw the whole trailer at the movies yesterday, and was wondering the same thing. I thought the updating of the orgin. radio show was alright. They did that in '39 and made it work, so an updating of the material for today, if done right could be good. But then the background in the trailer turned red like an explosion, and that line was said. It reminded me of the T.V. series some years back (with that guy named Ironhorse I think), where they said the real invasion was done in '53 with the movie, and they were just coming out, or something like that.

Spielburg is one of the few that can do justice to this kind of master piece, but I was disappointed with A.I. I got my whole in-law family to go with me to see Pinotetto, (sorry about the spelling), becoming real. It did not do much for me.

I wasn't too keen on AI either, thought it was too long, not a bad story but way too long.

I'd still of quite liked something from the source material, think of the fun you could have with cavelry charges and 19th century artillary aginst invincible alien walking machines in the English countryside.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. But, does this mean it will be set in the 1800s or modern time? I dearly want to see the exchange between the Thunderchild and the machine. See if it is as good as the pictures from the book in the mind...
