What is your dream sci fi show?

off the top of my head I cant say, because the dream show would have to be something very original, enough that it surprises me, and therefore isnt something I have come up it or seen before. but some elements that would appeal to me a lot:

- adult-oriented: not necessarily sex & violence - not excluding those either - but very mature as far as themes and characters go, nothing sanitized

- very alien and very human: watching people express their humanity when confronted with the extremely strange is always interesting

- there fewer humanoid, man-in-makeup aliens the better: the reverse of the Star Trek and Star Wars universes

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

I'd love to see a series set in this solar system, maybe 500 years in the future. No aliens, but humans on dozens of worlds. All kinds of governments, from monarchy to theocracy.

Hmmm...

1) A few hundred years in the future. (A number of current and past shows - Trek, B5, ect qualify here)

2) Pay real attention to the science! (Almost all SF shows do poorly here. B5 had some problems, but did better than others - particularly Trek; Starhunter was actually grasping with some interesting issues before it vanished; and Earth2 got a few things right by accident).

3) Realistic depiction of sublight interstellar travel - energy requirements, time dialation, why deceleration at journeys end is everybit as necessary as accelleration, ect.

4) Addendium to point 3: effects of acceleration and differing trajectories in battle situations (why spacecraft can't turn on the proverbial dime and come back for a second pass).

5) Alien aliens. As in...OK...they're sapient...but can we understand *anything* they're saying? Try ditching the universal translator as well.

6) Basic astronomical understanding and exploitation: Why your not going to find an earthlike world orbiting an A or B type star. Multiple star systems. Weird star systems like the `dwarf novae'.

How about a show entirely from the alien race's point of view, where humans are the "aliens".

I wonder whether the ideal type of series would have to have some limited run - a series that has to keep itself in business may have to cut too many corners on story telling ...maybe.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Interesting. Perhaps the humans are not seen - just their ships (in some ways similar to the first Romulan-Federation war) - but subtle clues are there...again, might work best as a mini-series.

Wayne

p.s. I was walking through the store the other day - saw a DVD of "Enemy Mine"

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

I wouldn't like to see a series of the trilogy, but I'd watch one based on it.

I'd like to see them make "The Mote in God's Eye" into a movie.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

If you're going to make a Niven movie, make Footfall first. It probably has some of the best visuals of any of his books I've read so far.

I have said it before here. Footfall is just about perfect. MiGE is a great book (all Niven/Pournelle books are grea), but Footfall is nearly perfect.

Long live the Dream Fthpf (or however he spelled it)

Vote Libertarian

"The Han Solo Chronicles: The Early Years"

Just a collection of tales about a young, quick-drawing smuggler and his tall furry sidekick set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Nothing to suggest the Force is anything but a hokey old religion. There were a trio of old books along this line ("Han Solo at Star's End," etc.)

The "BeverLunar Hills 90210" concept might be interesting. Or how about something about the basic struggle to set up a permanent Moon base. Lots of room for struggles against spacecraft/equipment malfunctions, accidents, landslide/cave-ins, meteoroids, (discussions about the hazards of 'roids ) stowaways, and the inevitable crew power struggles and personality conflicts.
"Lunar Hot Rod"

Watch the antics of this father and son team as they struggle to build the sickest and slickest moon buggies around.

Vote Libertarian

MIGE was, I beleive, my first Niven book - and one of the first significant SciFi books I read for me (not school).

Footfall was great because it really drew me into the world he was creating, one of the first times I was really aware of such a skill.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher
