This is an unofficial friendly contest among the SDC illuminati

When will Planet 1000 be discovered??

Pick your date now, they could go fast

Still to be determined:

What is considered a discovery?
Please state how you think the end of the Exo1000 contest should be determined. Online in Nature , Science, A&A? Or real publish date?
I would prefer we not trust the media...even our beloved SDC

Since it's a "friendly" we shall refine the rules later.

After we decide on final rules, you will have one chance to change your date.

If you wish your pick to be clandestine, feel free to PM me

Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. November 6, 2017.

I can relate to this. In my graphic novels, I originally showed a blurb on the discovery of the 1,000the earthlike world in 2025. I since reduced the number when I tightened the definition of earthlike for my books.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Well according to Exoplanets.org there are 209 known exoplanets around nearby stars (within 200 parsecs). I saw another site that had the total number at 230+ so I am not sure what the exact number is right now but it seems to be increasing fast.

So lets say we still need to find 700+ exoplanets, then I am guessing in about 4 years as we will get better at finding them.

We will hit #1000: June 6, 2011.

Don't let who you are keep you from becoming who you want to be!

The current rate is slowing. But CoRoT is going to find some. Kepler will add feww hundreds more from 2008. ALMA an GAIA should be operational by 2011 and will detect them by the thousands. So I do not believe in dates beyond 2012.

My bet: Feb 2nd 2011 (for pancakes'day).

I also bet that to be sure they will get the 1000th, teams wil stop announcing discoveries at say 950, cumulate batches of a hundred ones or so, and announce the batch. Within minutes, other batches of 100 will be announced by the other teams, claiming anteriority on the 1000th. So the count should go directly from about 950 to 1400, on Feb 2nd 2011.
I demand an internationnally appointed High Referee Committee to decide whether we have reached 1000 or not. As abq points out, the counts are not consistent. JPL's one looks a little bit conservative. Others are blatantly optimist. Should the bodies discovered in 1992 around pulsars be counted as planets? And dark-dark-brown dwarves? Exomoons if we find some?

A Team's claim to fame for having the 1000th
will mean nothing compared to a team with the most Earth-like planet.

Well yes if our technology doesn't advance to the next level.

It was just a guess.

I'll make another prediction...I'll soon be 23 in July. So maybe when I reach the age of 40 the exoplanet will be discovered.
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!
