Will the XT8 do what I want it to?

Hello,
I have become captivated by the beautiful astrophotography shots of the various nebula and galaxies. So much so I want to get a telescope to view them for myself.

My question is whether the XT8 would be a good choice for this type of viewing. Also, will I be able to see the same color, structure and detail shown in the photos by viewing them through the XT8? Or will they just look like fuzzy, colorless blobs through the telescope?

Thanks,
Dave
Well, most will look like fuzzy colorless blobs. The detail depends on the brightness and the type of object.

None will show the color, detail and sharpness of astrophotos, sorry.

The human eye only detects color above a certain brightness level. Some nebula show faint colors.
Photographs can collect the light for seconds, minutes or even hours, so can show those beautiful colors.

Planets and stars do show colors.

My STRONG advice is to find a local astronomy club before you spend the money. Most clubs have telescopes and members with scopes who will be more than happy to let you look through them so you can get a feeling for what you will get for the money you spend.
Then you can look through different types, sizes, and see the accessories that make viewing rewarding.

If you have trouble finding one near you, just post the area where you live and we can help you.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I've got an XT-8 (and a much larger telescope). The XT-8 is a wonderful telescope for observing the moon, planets, and double stars. It's ok, on a few of the largest galaxies, but that's about all.

"Or will they just look like fuzzy, colorless blobs through the telescope? "

okay, now my 2 cents.. and I know your collecting a handfull of change by now..

No the 8" will not show what you want it to. Neither will the 10" I use, or I guess even a 20". The human eye is just not nearly as sensitive to light as film during a time lapse exposure.

When you get your telescope after you looking at pictures of colorful amazing nebula, then go out one night to view it "for real" you should hope that you see a fuzzy colorless faint blob.. and if so be very happy that you actually saw it. That's the trill of amature astronomy, the fact that you are actually seeing a deep sky object (amazing in photography).. for real. The larger telescopes just make the fainter blobs a wee bit brighter.
