Will our solar system one day reach the center of our galaxy and get sucked into a black hole

still doesn't answer my question is our Solar System getting closer to the center of the galaxy or is that some sort of stupid thought some one came up wih

Technically, the solar systems orbit around the galaxy is decaying. But the time scale is rather longish.<br /><br />Hence, the possibility of a black hole nailing us prior to the central galactic black hole doing the same.<br /><br />Any black hole that did nail us prior to the galactic central one, would eventually get slurped up by the central one anyhow. <br /><br />Not that you would notice at that point.<br /><br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#ff0000"><strong>TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!</strong></font></p><p><font color="#339966"><strong>So many people, so few recipes !!</strong></font></p><p><font color="#0000ff"><strong>Let's clean up this stinkhole !!</strong></font> </p> </div>

the answer: No. The only time any significant "decay" of an orbit occurs is during close passes where a) friction with atmospheres bleeds off velocity b) tidal stresses mess with things, or c) graviational radiation occurs (really close...really big objects).<br /><br />So, unless something big comes by the sun, and whips it into the core of the galaxy...it isn't gonna happen. 'Rather longish' being my way of tipping off the reader.<br /><br />Gravitational radiation is indeed what I was refering to. It is noticable at short ranges as you indicated. Before that happens I hear Andromeda is gonna tear us a new one. Its the closest galaxy and is flying toward us as at a high rate of speed. Its big black hole may get sucked into ours to make an even bigger one. But there will be a lot of damage to our galaxy first. Stars will get thrown this way and that. Some will get tossed toward the middle. some will get totally booted out of the milky Way. Since we are out near the edge our star could be one of those that gets kicked out. That is suppose to happen before the sun goes big and red and eats the Earth.<br /><br />Hey maybe theyre wrong tho. Andromeda will miss us and grab a few stars as it runs by us. Still could mean something important for us. Tear us free of the Milky Way an send us out into intergalactic space. Maybe we will end up in a close by dwarf galaxy or Magellan Cloud.
