PistolPete - I guess you could say I'm old fashioned. I still prefer to play my RPGs with a pencil and paper around a table in a darkly lit room. Being able to reach over and smack somebody over the back of the head keeps stupid comments down to a minimum.

Back when I could blow an entire weekend on RPG'ing I would agree. Nowadays, it's hard to find that kind of time and get everyone's schedule coordinated. For me, most of my old friends that gamed together are dispersed such that travel time would be prohibitive. (One weekend get together we did decide to just hang out and roll some dice one evening. That was fun but it took some getting used to.) So, getting together with them online is much easier and there's someone else crunching the numbers, looking up the rules and keeping track of everything.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I remember about a year and a half ago, EQII ran a promo with one of the big pizza chains (dominoes or pizza hut, forget which) where you could actually order pizza in game and they would deliver it to your house.

I've always like raiding. Working together with a large group of people to accomplish a goal was a big draw for me. We were strict about showing up on time with most people present and accounted for a minimum of 15 mins before the raid including having all their necessary consumables etc.. Absences had to have legitimate excuses and "non-hackers" didn't get to stay around for very long. Loot was distributed using a DKP system that worked well for everyone. Random rolling just seems to tick people off and doesn't give anyone the sense of accomplishment or deserved reward for play that DKP systems do. But, end-game raiding takes a toll and I tired of paying it while trying to enjoy "real life." heh heh

WoW definitely has much more solo potential than it did. However, it is an "MM"ORPG and that means you'll need to join others in order to accomplish many tasks. I don't think it will ever have the solo'ing potential of some other MMORPGs.

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

IMHO, EQII is a big improvement over EQ. I too played EQ for about 3 years up until they came out with PoP.

Right now I am working on PvP gear, still I have more hps, equal mana and above average spell damage (810) so I get many crits and do big damage, im demo speccd too

Well, WoW is very solo-friendly as I said. But, there are many group quests that you will need some help on. Also, after the regular gambit of running outdoor quests, the rest of the game centers around group activity. That means running instances and heroics at the minimum or entering into PVP. It doesn't mean you have to "raid" but you'll eventually have to get a group on occasion to progress in gear.

I agree. WoW is 100% better in regards to the solo/casual player than EQI ever was.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Sure, gear helps someone even the score if they lack some skill or knowledge. But, gear isn't the most important thing in a match. (That's in Battleground play. I haven't done arena yet but I hear gear is a much more potent force there than in battleground matches because, let's face it, arena is about killing someone else, not capturing and holding an objective.)
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

The other thing I can say is it is the most unsatisfactory translation of P&P gaming to MMORPG. Back when I played, the reliance on certain key classes being in your group was ridiculous. You "Have" to have a rogue or you'll pass up all the chest loot, etc.. Another problem was the lack of any.. ANY.. play outside of instanced encounters. No PVP, No random monsters to go beat up on while you wait for a group, no places to go explore and see. Just a big city and a bunch of magical portals. Heck, it was beautifully done but it had even less content available than Anarchy Online when it first opened. And, it wasn't designed as well as AO was either. All in all, a good game for those who never want to play solo or have a group/guild to adventure with everyday.

Not bashing on DDO. Just saying that it probable doesn't appeal to your average MMORPG'er.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Lotro > WoW

The world is only Eriador now but they are making all of Middle Earth and the game will truly be impressive in the years to come.

Nothing like walking up to Rivendell and seeing the valley for the first time. Absolutely amazing view.

Another plus is the playerbase in lotro is also generally more mature and older then in WoW. A lot less kiddies then those that plague WoW

I beta'd LotRO.

/sigh

The most wonderful graphics had to do with the trees. They bought an excellent tree generator and they really looked great.

Other than that, there wasn't anything about LotRO that made it stand out from any other MMORGP. They had a single-player instance in there which was a really interesting approach and worked well with the storyline. They had, at that time, PVP which allowed the player to create a "monster" character which I thought was a very unique and inventive way to present something new to MMORPG players. Of all the content, that was the most groundbreaking and I believe they should have really done more with it. (There was no ability to play any of the "evil" races as a PC.) Crafting at that time was sort of interesting but nothing overly remarkable and it certainly had its list of shortcomings. The best thing I can say their crafting is that they tried to introduce some of SWG's concepts into it. The beta was actually fairly smooth and I'd have to say it was definitely one of the smoothest betas I've ever participated in. They really did a good job of polishing the bugs out of the basic engine before they went to beta.

But, aside from that, it was the same old thing that other games have done much better, IMO. In short, and in my opinion, the target playerbase is only going to be those people who are very, very enthusiastic about LotR and desperately want to play an MMO in that environment. That's the only thing that will keep their playerbase, IMO.

Is it a bad game? Not really. Is it something special that could draw players away from other MMORPGs? Not really.

(Keep in mind, my experience was from being a beta-tester, not a player during release or after. So, I have no idea what they may have changed or introduced since then. The quality of the game may have changed.)
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I must admit, I was a huge MMO fan. Played the original EverQuest for about 7 years then went to Dark ages of Camelot for about 5 years. Tried WoW, but was way to cartoonish. I've since quite for about 1.5 years now and seeking councling

Was fun, but real life got in the way of my MMO adventures.

SWG sucked. Period. Well...the crafting system was good...but thats ALL it had going for it. If you actually wanted to advance you HAD to group up..and even then it sucked.

The only other games that I have played that I actually liked is Earth and Beyond. Im really pissed that they canceled that. That was imo a really great game. Crafting was easy and simple granted. But the storyline and general outline of the game was original. And by that I mean that it was not based off of a book or some other popular series/movies.

The other one that I like is Guild Wars. Great graphics..I mean REALLY great graphics. The best i've seen in ANY online game. No crafting in it to speak of really. Unless you want to count being able to make your own armor or weapon which was the exact same thing as any other weapon/armor type of your class. This game is purely about skill which makes all the other online games pale in comparision. Even though you have literally hundreds of skills to choose from you can only use eight at any one time. As I said before the armor and weapons are the same as anything else in your class, or can be if you get the right runes etc to put into your armor/weapons, which isnt hard. The amount of damage a weapon does is very little, what does the damage is your skills. And there are literally hundreds of different combonations of skill sets being used. Max lvl is 20 and is easy to get to so you dont have to worry about hours upon hours of leveling up your char. And the best part is it is free to play. Just your initial cost of buying the game and thats it. The only part that can get boring is that all the quests are basically the same...go kill or get such and such an item. They have a badge system that is quite extensive and for the most part does nothing for you except give you a title to wear next to your name. I still play it even after three years..which is a record for me lol. (well close to three year

I have an answer for everything...you may not like the answer or it may not satisfy your curiosity..but it will still be an answer.
"Imagination is more important then Knowledge" ~Albert Einstien~
Guns dont kill people. Yeah, I agree, DDO is pretty group friendly.
However, I got bored waiting for constant groups and decided to make a solo only character.

I believe it was a paladin9/rougue2/sorc1 with high cha decent int and a decent str.(could be wrong)

Putting points into UMD let me cast alot of wands and could wand whip myself till I got healed.

rogue lv 2 for evasion in light armor takes the most dangerous spells pretty much out of the game for you.

The lv of sorc put my sp wayyy above pure pally, could get all traps with +5 thieves tools and could wand whip arcane spells too.

Elite gear from my other rich guys helped alot.

I finished all quests up to lv 6 through elite solo.

I was durn good at playing DDO, one of the more experienced people out there.

It's always satisfying to be able to solo a non-soloable game.

That's when I ended it, "Well, I've pretty much beat this game at this point", I said to myself.

Just to be able to brag about taking out big bosses by myself was great.

WHEN ARE THEY GONNA RELEASE A GREAT MMO FOR THE PS3?????

Diablo 3 would be heaven.....
Any hack and slash would be nice though.

COME ON!!!!!!

My characters need to make names for themselves on other platforms.

Names I use for classes regardless of game-

Bushido (pure beat down melee guy)
Atma Weapon (Rogue)
Magitek (offensive melee/magic)
Sunforger (pure caster, support)
Ultima (pure caster, offensive)
Gengi (2 weapon fighter)
Clorox (healer)
