So the crew have moved PMA2 and attached it to Harmony all remotely via Canadarm2? How did they lock it in place just using Canadarm2?

CBMs don't need manual assistance.

Vote Libertarian

Common Berthing Mechanism

The robot arm moves the PMA to the node then motor driven latches pull it tight then motor driven bolts (screws) bolt the parts together. I think 16 bolts but not absolutely sure of that.

"What problem is this? First ive heard about it "

A crew member was in the airlock test facility as JSC when he reported smelling smoke. They were at pure O2 but ambient pressure. Got out ok but until we can figure out the cause and whether the units on ISS have the same potential, no EVAs.

So this is going to impact STS122 launch?

How come the media havent picked up on this? Even the Nasa site doesnt mention this and go on to talk about Wed's EVA to relocate Harmony

That's a great question I've been asking myself.

Mum's the word, apparently.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I'd say they probably have a good handle on the problem, and anticipate having it cleared before they get nearer the EVA.

It's bound to come up at the next MSB though.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Still surprising the way the media are they havent reported it. We all know they're like a pack of wolves when anything out of the ordinary happens at Nasa

Node2/PMA2 got moved this morning with no problems.

The spacesuits look like a no-win situation. If they find something it is bad and if they don't it is still going to cast a pall on the next spacewalks. It is hard for me to imagine what it must be like to be one of the top management people at a PR nightmare like NASA.

Congrats and best wishes to them all.

"The spacesuits look like a no-win situation. "

No, looks like it will be cleared. Water purge now approved, likely will resume use pretty soon. No smoke evidence was found.

SARJ might be inspected on 3 rd stage EVA but likely on 1E (either on an added 4th EVA or on 3rd bumping something).

Have they analysed what the metal was yet that was brought back with Discovery?

I assume that wasn't an option this time because of the time-crunch, or was it more about consumables for the EMU's?

I'm a little surprised they're not already talking in terms of a definite 4th EVA for the '122 mission. I guess this again comes back to Atlantis not having the SSPTS capability to allow some extra docked time?

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Spacewalkers to Hook Up Harmony at its New Location

From NASAA 11.15.07

A 6-hour, 40-minute spacewalk by International Space Station Commander Peggy Whitson and Flight Engineer Dan Tani will begin the external outfitting of the Harmony node in its new position in front of the U.S laboratory Destiny.

The spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. EST Tuesday from the U.S. airlock Quest. Whitson, the lead spacewalker, will wear the suit with the red stripes while Tani will be in the suit with the barber-pole stripes.

After leaving the airlock and setting up tools and equipment, Whitson will remove, vent and stow an ammonia jumper, part of a temporary cooling loop. Removing it allows connection of the hookup of the permanent ammonia cooling loop on a fluid tray on the station's exterior.

Tani meanwhile will retrieve a bag of tools left outside on the station during the Nov. 9 spacewalk by Whitson and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko. Then he'll remove two fluid caps to prepare for connection of that permanent cooling loop.

Next he will move on to reconfigure a circuit that was used for a Squib firing unit, a small pyrotechnical device that freed a radiator on the Port 1 truss for its deployment last Thursday.

Much of the spacewalk will be devoted to work with Harmony's Loop A fluid tray. That 300-pound, 18.5-foot tray will be moved from its temporary position on the S0 truss, at the center of the station's main truss, to Harmony, atop the starboard avionics tray.

Tani will join Whitson at S0. They'll release the fluid tray and then move it to Harmony. They'll use a kind of relay technique, one moving ahead and attaching tethers to be ready to receive the tray, then the other moving farther forward to take the next handoff.

Once they reach the installation point they'll bolt down the tray, then hook up its six fluid line connections, two at S0, two at the tray and two in bet

But the Krell forgot one thing John. "I'm a little surprised they're not already talking in terms of a definite 4th EVA for the '122 mission. I guess this again comes back to Atlantis not having the SSPTS capability to allow some extra docked time? "

because the 4th EVA requires A) an on time launch (i.e., less than 48 hours pad hold) B) a flight day 3 renedezvous opportunity, and C) no extra time for focused inspections. So it is hard to plan definitely on it. And witht he SARJ we want to ensure time.

Yes, if time was available a stage EVA might be planned. However, we need more data because we are not sure. The metal analyzed is single content and we can't (yet) understand that. If rubing you would expect 2 metal components.

Request confirmation. The Fod was generated from within the SARG? Let us hope it was from only one trundle.
