"What does a ULF flight mean?"

My guess: Utilization and Logistics Flight - resupply and experiment rotation, using one of the ninja turtles, er, MPLMs, as opposed to a construction flight.

Now one of the experts can set me straight...

Yes, the new one will be installed in the USOS, probably Node 3.

Well it will bascially be the same as the one in the RS. But instead of collecting urine and disposing of it, it will be reprocessed. It is a psychological hurdle, but actually the processed water came out SO pure that they had to add in stuff to make it safe to drink (and I don't mean like checmicals to make it safe). After seeing it work I would rink it.

You probably really don't want to know where each of the H2O
molecules in that glass of water you're drinking has been.

From spaceflightnow

"Tani, Expedition 16 commander Peggy Whitson and Russian flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko ran into problems earlier today with circuit breaker trips that briefly prevented flight controllers from changing the orientation of a right-side solar panel as required for the shuttle's docking next week.

The trouble involved one of the two wings making up the starboard 4, or S4, array on the right side of the station's main power truss. Those arrays currently are prevented from rotating to track the sun by earlier trouble with a massive rotary joint.

Concern about the solar alpha rotary joint, or SARJ, is behind a push to add a fourth spacewalk to Atlantis' mission. Engineers want a detailed inspection to help them figure out what might be wrong and what might be needed to fix it.

While unable to rotate paddle-wheel style, the two S4 solar wings also can be turned about their long axis, much like changing the pitch of an airplane propeller, to maximize electrical output. Early today, however, one or more remote power control modules, which act like circuit breakers, tripped open and stalled the so-called beta gimbal joint used to turn the S4-1A array.

It's not yet clear what might have caused the circuit breaker trips, but engineers were able to develop a work-around that enabled them to turn the array as required. They also sent commands to reposition the contaminated right-side SARJ to improve electricity generation.

The circuit breaker trips are not expected to have any impact on the Atlantis mission. "trips are not expected to have any impact on the Atlantis mission. "

Ha! Assessment is not done. Frantically trying to get it done before the tanking meeting. It will have an impact, just don't know yet how bad. Likely won't delay the launch but could curail what is done.

Is it possible or fesable to to return this "wing" to the ground using the Orbiter, repair the joint, and return it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

SARJ inspection will now be a stage EVA next week. Probably adding a BGA inspection.

"Ok. I'll bite. What's a BGA? "

Sorry, Beta Gimbal Assembly. That is what is causing the latest problems. The two redundant power feeds fails at the same time showing a real current trip. One was able to be closed and we could park it. But clearly something is wrong. Since we have redundant feeds either something like a debris hit occurred or something major broke. We will take a quick inspection to see if we can tell. But limits power on the starboard array, which is already limited. EVA next week will likely look at it if we can work it out fast enough.

I wonder if the current power problems on the ISS (First the SARJ, now the BGA) will lead to a longer delay; that would give them additional time to troubleshoot this problem. Unfortunately, it would start eating up margin for future flights.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I reckon another problem over-shadowing all this is what to do with the S6 truss. They'll surely want to get the SARJ repaired and demonstrated as such for a period of time before attaching the final array set.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!
