Apologies if this is not the place to ask this, but there will be a small group of us hopefully coming down to Florida to watch the launch of STS-127 in May, June (or whenever) from Toronto. We're members of an astronomy club, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and I was wondering if there's an astronomy club in the vacinity of the Kennedy Space Centre, Cocoa Beach, etc that maybe we could hook up with. It would be great while we're in Florida if there was an opportunity to look at the skies too...considering that there are some objects observable from Florida that we cannot see in Toronto.

Any suggestions welcome.

Katrina

Here is a website listing some http://www.4saleusa.net/flastro/

The first one is the closest to Kennedy, looks like they have observing parties once a month. The only one near me, the Alachua Amateur Astronomy club is pretty big if you're coming through Gainesville. I've never been to their star parties because I don't like to be outside that late, but I hear they are pretty good.

Good luck seeing the launch though...summer Florida weather can be pretty annoying.

Just let me know, and even if we're not officially open, I will be happy to meet and greet you. Your club seems to be WAY more active than ours! you guys do research!
Posted by rybanis

Yes, we are pretty active. Clubs come in all shapes and sizes, with all kinds of goals, and management styles. They also tend to change over time as members come and go over the years. We are blessed with good management, and some dedicated and talented people at this time...and of course even more belssed by the founders. If you look at the website, the photo tour of how the scope came to be is fascinating. However, we are derailing this topic, sorry Katrina.

Wake up Floridians...help her out!

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
