So what's everybody's favorite space movie? Mine is either INdipendence Day (special effects, good plot, good actors); or Star trek: 1st Contact (good plot, anything Star trek is good)

Special effects and a realistic plotline are my two main criteria...

Dark City deserves serious consideration. When location of the city is revealed, it is one of the very best 'movie moments' of all time.

Automat scene is incredible too.

'Tuning' battle climax and morphing buildings some of the best CG effects ever.

Plot twists are surprising and compelling.

Keifer Sutherland character delightfully different, really supports theme of flick.

Interesting to watch Dark City and Memento as a double feature.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I liked the dream & memory visualizations in Dark City. curious what you say about the revelation of the city's location, the friend I saw it with found it weakened the movie.

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

Yeah, Dark City was pretty good. Weird, dark and angsty, pithy.

Aon odd choice of mine: Forbidden Planet. Personally, for the day and age, it was an astounding movie, and even the sophisticated-cartoonish animation of Harryhousen was great.

Robbie the Robot: "Ah, Doctor Morbeus..."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I can't say I'm too keen on the movie version of 2001. At the time it came out (mid-1960s), it was mainly talked about for its special effects. Which were pretty dog-gone good -- for the mid-1960s.

Now, Arthur C. Clarke's book was to die for -- beautifully done science fiction. I think a big part of the reason I never got that excited about the movie was that I had read the book first.

As for the best space movie of all time: this will probably mark me forever as a barbarian, but I really liked the first Star Wars movie -- the so-called "Episode IV," which came out in the late 70s. It tells a great story. It maintains a sense of humor. It's got fine special effects, even by present-day standards. And it lacks that tone of self-aware pretentiousness that crept into the later Star Wars flicks. When it came out, I saw that bad boy seven times during the summer between my junior and senior years of high school -- and at this late date, I still love it.

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

I know it'll sound bad, but I think that "total recal" would be in the top ten (excluding anime).

See you at the paarty Richter! Ahhhhh!

total Recall comes on TV all the time. It's pretty good if you don't have anything better to do.

Depends. If you see it on the wide screen, then it is SURELY 2001 a space oddessy.

But I would pick Alien or Bladerunner over 2001, if it was on the small screen. The small screen doesn't do justice to 2001

I have gots to admit that War of the Worlds was a thriller of a movie and a heck of a fun ride. I know it really did not go with the original H.G. Wells radio show but still it was a very good space movie. Could you imagine waking up to a normal day then see things comming out of the ground to promote certain harm and death to all humans and life as we know it? Just amazing and spookie too.

For me, it works in this order:

/> 2001: A Space Odyssey - Stanley Kubrick
/> Blade Runner - Ridley Scott
/> Alien - Ridley Scott
/> Planet of the Apes - Franklin J. Schaffner
/> Star Wars - George Lucas
/> The Terminator - James Cameron
/> Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Steven Spielberg
/> A Clockwork Orange - Stanley Kubrick
/> Escape from New York - John Carpenter
/> Slaughterhouse Five - George Roy Hill
Overall I have to go with "Forbidden Planet" just because it managed the difficult task of balancing action/adventure with real intellectual SF concepts. Also I love the scene when they are walking through the Krell machine. And how can you beat Robbie? I always wanted to se a sequel done with the same retro look (Why not? Its the future who can predict fashion trends?) and with Leslie Nielsen as the aging starship captain brought out of retirement. I was never convince that Altair IV was really detroyed anyway. I think the "self destruct" mechanism was really a defensive device that wrapped the planet in a light bending force field making it invisible! Hmmmm, anyone want to invest in a movie project!

For sheer fun, "Star Wars" (I refuse to say "Episdoe IV" or "A New Hope" its just plain "Star Wars!" It was like nothing ever seen before, but seen way too much since.

If you restrict yourself to just movies from the 1980s onwards, then you're really missing out on some cinematic treasures.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

yes, one of my favourites from pre 1980s was Robinson Crusoe on Mars - when humans could breath the atmosphere , wouldn't freeze or have their blood boil off in the minute pressure - real good old cardboard SF.

Long live the noCD crackers!

Don't forget about "Contact." It's a good movie that explores some into politics along with the sci-fi. (and Jodie Foster is hot in it!)
