Can someone help me find a Book?

Hey guys, this is slightly off topic, but i'm in a serious bind. I'm 18, and many years ago before i appriceated reading, i began to read a book, but as many 12 year old boys dont, didnt finish past the first half. The book was lost over the years and i'm dying to read it again. I've done many google searches which have provided nothing useful.<br /><br />The book to which i refer is a Sci-Fi (probably military Sci-Fi) about convicted criminals, before being murdered in the same way they murdered their victim, being asked if they wanted to be elegible for reincarnation. After saying yes and being shot several times in the upper torso, the scene switches to a robot tank of some variety complaining of its lonliness and longing for death. After that, i have no clue.
