I judged it a bit dimmer than delta, which is where my +3.2 came from. To refine the estimate I defocused delta to be the same size as the comet then compared the brightness, came up with basically the same result.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Today's APOD shows the expansion of the coma over the last few days. I also have animations showing the expansion, brightening, and subsequent dimming.

I concur that it has definitely dimmed, especially as evidenced by the brightness of the stars seen through the coma. The first couple days they weren't even visible. Now they're visually observable through a modest scope and the camera tells the whole story.

That said, my astrometrics show that the expansion of the outter coma continues at a steady rate given any 24hr period.

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

The stars behind the coma now were not there a day or two ago.
It is moving about 1 minute a day in both RA and Dec.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. There were other stars of similar mag behind the coma, however.

I've been plotting it over the USNO catalog limiting to 16.7Mag. Doing a plate solution is the best way to get a feel for how much expansion (and speed there-of) there is in the coma.

I can observe to about 16Mag here, photograph to 21Mag without "extraordinary measures"

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Thanks Adrenalynn,

Compared to your images, they are probably a bit rubbish, but I enjoyed taking
them & sharing them here.

I will probably go back either tomorrow or more likely Thursday & get a few more.

I don't know, but is Comet Holmes fainter today? I does look larger, no doubt.

Perhaps the Coma is dispersing & the comet will fade back to obscurity?

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It was definitely dimmer with a larger coma last night. Not up for me yet (still daylight/just sunset on the left coast).

JLRO will see light in about an hour, and Holmes should be worth observing at about 20:40 (out of the light muck)

After that, I'll probably take a shot at a couple nearby Messiers.

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

If you're gonna have a peek at it, I'd do it soon. Haven't calculated yet, but from my vantage, looks like the brightness is down nearly a half mag, and the coma continues to expand.

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Thanks Adrenalynn,

That's what I thought.

Comet 17/P Holmes is definately on the wane. Will take another look tonight.

It is bright & sunny here right now (a little chilly 2 C / 36 F). If stays clear, should get another good look.

The moon has now waned & is rising later enough now to see Holmes against a 'dark' sky.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. i could see it quite clear here in halifax nova scotia. clear sky all night. Local paper had a write up on it. I'm 99% sure it is what I saw looked like perseus had a bit of a hunchback i used all of your directons to find it if I am right it was behind perseus and with 2 of his brighter stars formed a perfect triangle i dont have the advantage of a telescope yet(still trying to find one) and my binocs(8x40) didnt give it any justice other than no matter how much i tryed to focus it stayed a giant fuzzball in the sky. so I am certain i was looking in the right direction. thanks a million guys you all rock excellent advice in finding it. to the naked eye it looked the same all night till morn but dimmed a bit I am assuming due to the sun starting to come up. ty Jason

Location: Ashford, Kent, United Kingdom.

51 degrees, 8' North. 0 degree, 53' East.

I've just been outside & have been looking at Comet Holmes with my 7 X 50's.

What has become more obvious, that the coma has expanded enormously, but there is
a bright, well defined centre.

To the naked eye, Comet Holmes as faded somewhat. The eastward movement is noticable,
somewhat further away from Mirfak, than only on Monday, when I took the images
a few posts up on Monday.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Something here a little different.

Inner solar system as seen from Comet 17/P Holmes.

Mercury is at magnitude +3.85 & is only 14% illuminated.
Venus is at magnitude +1.08 & is 28% illuminated.
Earth is at magnitude +0.98 & is only 6% illuminated.
The Moon is at, or just below naked eye visibilty at magnitude +6.87
Mars is at magnitude +1.87 & is 28% illuminated.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Just got back from some dark sky observing. Yes the center has dimmed, but the comet is so much larger than last weekend.
Just with the naked eye it was so easy to see it's diameter.

Through binoculars it was sureal. You see all these pinpoint background stars, and this big fuzzy ball floating in front of them.

The only thing it's missing is the tail. Best comet I've seen since Hale-Bopp.

I saw it too, not very highly magnified though...
It seemed impossible to focus to me, though that just might be the fact its mostly a cloud of debris now....

This was the fuzzy ball just north of Perseus right?
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

Yep, that was it. There is a tiny star like center, but it's likely too small for binoculars. I can only see that when I get the scope on it.

The coma is getting much larger and fainter as the dust spreads out, but the total magnitude seems to be holding around Mag +3 to +3.2

Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
