Really impressive pictures of that thing being rolled out of its hangar. That payload must weigh an awful lot...

Yeah, if I were in the area I would seriously be making an attempt to see it. I've heard the launch is quite a bit louder than you would expect...

One thing I've always wondered with the Delta IV-H is just how they can get away with having such tiny connecting struts on the strap on boosters? I mean, obviously it works, but they look so fragile and weak. i guess the same could be said for the connections between the SRB's and the ET on the shuttle (and for that matter, the ET and the shuttle ittself).

Everything is relative to distance, weather (wind and humidity) and the rocket. Delta 4 medium and Delta 4-H are actually fairly impressive from the Port, eight miles away, because of their slow speed.

Solids aren't always louder from afar because they go faster. But Delta 2, for example, can be viewed in public from less than three miles away and thus are pretty impressive.

Having seen Delta 4-H from three miles I can tell you that it is the closest thing to the shuttle I have seen in an unmanned launchm, despite being a about a quarter the thrust. It was probably about as close to a Saturn 1B as I'll get.

-Ben

Perhaps I'm also just looking at the top - right below the nose cones on the strap-ons. Those attachments are very small. I haven't seen the brackets/struts/connections at the base of the booster...Would those be much stronger?
