Distorted crystals use 'pseudogravity' to bend light like black holes do

This article totally missed any transmission of knowledge about how this arrangement of crystals is related to how gravity affects light paths. It has been known for a long time that materials change the paths of light that passes through them. So, the questions to be answered are:
1. What is new about this?
2. Why is this so much like gravitational effects that it can be used to study gravity, not just mimic gravity with a different phenomenon?
