Does someone have images of the Endeavour damage?

The news articles I have been seeing don't have it. I would like to see a photo and a graphic of the laser scan.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

That doesn't look good. Looks like it right through on the edge.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

There have been Shuttle missions with up to 300 of comparable damages (e.g. STS-27) and it was no problem to safely return to Earth.

Sounds more like luck than anything else.

An AP report says it went all the way through the tiles to the felt over the aluminum skin.

I hope they try and repair that.

Mmh, is that a crack in the upper right (of the image) tile? The right edge of the lower damaged tile seems loose too.

That looks like no problem, not that I'm any sort of expert in this, but just as a layman I can't imagine there being any big problem with that. I remember John Young being asked about the heat tiles, his response was that they can lose whole tiles, but not too many of them, and not in super-critical areas. I'm guessing that the heat load where this tile damage is isn't very high. If a leading edge were damaged, I'd be worried, but that area looks pretty flat.

That's true but that was before Columbia,NASA can not take any chances now especialy with the media on it's back plus it would be a good time to try out repair methods

SG, thanks for your reply, which I know comes from internal expert opinions.

I will be optimistic that the boundry layer of the air flow during entry will flow over the damage. I think a lot depends on how much local turbulance is introduced by the hole, and whether local turbulence (if any) would cause hot plasmas to move into the hole. How accurate are the turbulence calculations at this local scale (a scale size of less than one cm), and at the re-entry speeds of the shuttle, and have calculations at this scale size been experimentally verified? The reason I ask is that my limited view of the air flow simulations during reentry I have seen published have always been at a much larger scale and grid size.

thanks!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.

Good point silylene.

I think that NASA will not take the chance. shuttle_guy will know more, but IMO NASA
will do anything to prevent Endeavour from joining the sad list with Apollo 1, Challenger & Columbia
of fallen spacecraft & crews.

I agree, that aerodynamics will probably prevent the hole from becoming fatal, but that
is a risk IMO that cannot be taken.

It is a good opportunity to try out a heat shield repair.

After all, it will be knowledge gained in respect of hull repairs in general when humans
DO travel back to the Moon & go onto Mars, 1 Ceres, Callisto, etc.

With these missions there is a strong chance of micrometeoroid impacts.

NASA cannot take the risk, no matter how small it may look on paper.

Thats my opinion for what it is worth.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It is a bit dicey, I mean, if the repair is performed and it's not perfectly smooth, the "fix" could cause more damage due to excess heating than leaving it alone. It will be interesting what the decision will be.
Don't let your sig line incite a gay thread ;>)

My big concern is that it's near the wheel door, one of the weaker points in the TPS.

I'm sure the engineers are examing every possibility and considering the cost/benefit ratio of every scenario.

We'll just have to trust Wayne Hale....which I'm pretty comfortable doing.

Then again, I'm not on Endevour.

I suspect they have the same faith, though.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I'm with 3488, a repair of some kind has to be attempted. If not and she burns things will get extremely ugly.

What if repairing it makes thing worse, or causes worse damage to the TPS?

Then it would be just as ugly.

Trust the engineers to weigh the cost/benefit, and do the right thing.
As they said in the news conference, even though they don't think repairs are needed, they are working on a plan anyway, so if it's needed, it's ready.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I'm telling you as someone outside the forest that losing this crew with no repair being attempted when there are 3 repair options available will be looked upon as a whole other thing than a failed repair.

Not saying that's right, but it is true. I'm hearing it in my own home, from family & friends and on the street.

Just because you are hearing it, does not make it right, or the most logical course of action.

Again, what if the repair actions will make it worse, but because we have to try something, let's increase the odds of compromising the craft and/or killing the crew just so we do something?

Does that make sense to you?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Did you see the model they have made of the damage?(forgot its technical name, im sure its some very long word )

It does look deep, but they did say earlier on that if half the tile is left they will be ok. More than half looked left to me

All I was trying to convey is the the PR risk and I did say their perception may not be corect, so yes I 'get' it

Yes, I saw the last briefing an hour ago.

What it looks like is not the question. The question is what will the flow do to the distribution of plasma (heat) during reentry.

It looks ugly, but all the models of flow are saying it is not an issue. Which is why, unless there's a compelling reason to do so, they MIGHT leave it alone. We'll know more in a day or two when the tests have been conpleted.

I know it's hard for people who want instant answers to wait, but geez, let the guys do their job and examine the issue!!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I know you did, but you seemed to me to be indicating the PR value of attempting a repair was more important that making things safer.

Maybe I interpreted it wrong.

Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. On the 1st return to flight mission, didnt they test some repair methods? Ive forgot what they were now. Are those methods the ones being suggested IF they need to repair this tile damage?

M

AFAIK, that is 2 of the methods.

They have a third now for a multitile repair, which I don't think has been tested in space. Not one you want to try unless really needed.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. That the one involving bolting a sheet of whatever material it is to cover the damaged area? They did say they didnt want to try that as it would be covering undamaged tiles unnecessarily
