Does the Z1 ISS truss still have a use?

No. It contains the CMG's and KU and S band antennas'

They wouldn't bring it back anyways. Payload bay configurations are only for up payloads. The portion of bay for it would have to be empty on ascent to hold it for the return. See STS-32

Yes. The Long Term Exposure Facility was returned to Earth back in the late '80s or early '90s. From ISS, the pallet that carried CanadaArm2 up was also returned. Furthermore, the cargo transfer modules are never attached permanently. Rather, they return to the cargo bay before undocking.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Is there a reason that the payload bay portion that would hold the returned part must be empty on ascent?

The Z1 is a truss, technically, but since the P6 truss was moved from it to it's current position it is no longer a load bearing structure.

So, again we are defeated. "I thought Z1 was a truss. Which truss are you talking about? "

The long truss of S6-S4-S0-P4-P6, Z1 is a truss so you are correct from that point of view. We generally just call it the "Z1" and the other stuff the truss. Sorry if it wasn't clear. The S-bands are on the S and P sides of the truss.

"It normally would be empty because the fittings in that part of the payload bay would be for the down cargo. "

Sometimes you can share - for example on 1E the ICC carrier will go up with 2 payloads and an NTA tank and come back with an NTA and a CMG. But you can't always fit the same thing up as down. Hence when the EAS was jettisoned in July rather than brought back.
