Dr Who goes in search of sex in Cardiff
By Hugh Davies
(Filed: 18/10/2005)

After 42 years of tackling the Daleks before the 9pm watershed, Doctor Who is to be given a risque spin-off for adults on the BBC.

In the words of its creator, Russell T Davies, it will be "dark, wild and sexy". Davis said yesterday that Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who), would be a thriller set in Cardiff.

Swansea-born Davies is the chief writer and executive producer of the acclaimed revival of Doctor Who, which attracted a regular audience of 10 million.

He hopes to make Torchwood cult viewing. BBC3 is to screen the series next year, in the expectation of cashing in on the anticipated success of the next series of Doctor Who, starring David Tennant.

Davies is likely to deploy a similar sense of irreverence in the new series, which he said would unfold over 13 episodes "with humour".

He described it as "the X Files meets This Life". Stuart Murphy, the BBC3 controller, said: "There will be sex and swearing, I assume. I'm quite relaxed about that, as it will be post-watershed and Russell can do it in a funny and sexy way."

The star will be John Barrowman, who plays the bi-sexual Capt Jack Harkness.

Link to story
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.

That was revealed the first time he turned up, but you had to be paying attention to the interplay. Remember the Dr asked the girl "Ah, but which would he ( Cpt. Jack ) WANT to dance with, ask yourself that!".

And i trust my instinct here, this is going to suck all sorts of animal scrote'

I guess this would resolve the reports that Captain Jack would be returning, which were seemingly contradicted by the absence of John Barrowman in any of the Season Two castlists. I'll wait to pass judgement until the series happens. Frankly, from the description I'm not even convinced it's really a Doctor Who spinoff and not just a science fiction series which seems to fit into a similar universe.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Well, now I've seen the report at Outpost Gallifrey, and it's very much a genuine spinoff. Interesting.... It will segue from events in "The Christmas Invasion" and will feature Captain Jack, although it apparently will not entirely explain how he got from the Gamestation in the distant future ("The Parting of the Ways") to 21st Century Cardiff. They are intending to use Cardiff as a location far more than in "Doctor Who", which is moving away from Cardiff more and more (in setting, if not in actual shooting location).

The title has an interesting history. Apparently during the filming of the first season of the new Doctor Who, they had a serious problem with pirates trying to make off with videotapes, so they took to labeling them "Torchwood" instead of "Doctor Who". Obviously, this series shoots that tactic in the foot, so they'll have to be a bit more creative with tapes in future.

One of the writers confirmed for Torchwood is PJ Hammond, the creator of Sapphire and Steel, so that may give it an interesting flavor.

Teen singer Charlotte Church has been signed to play "Face of a Devil", described as a raunchy, Satan-worshipping villain.

This could get, um, interesting....

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I have a VHS copy of "K9 and Company" -- the pilot, anyway. It's not bad, but the theme song will drive you utterly and hopelessly insane. I would not be surprised if the theme song alone had killed it. It's that bad.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
