I think a little image processing will reveal more than one moon in some of my shots...

Saturn is definately making a showing

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

ok, im new at this, so is it just me or did the Umbra kind of miss it's mark? The upper left of the moon was the bright part earlier (about an hour ago) and now the bottom seems to be the bright area as if the umbra shadow is missing puting the moon in total eclipse. From diagrams i saw of this eclipse i thought we'd be in total eclipse for nearly an hour.

i figured out why my diagrams were off... day light saving time haha. I guess i just don't know what totality look like, because i was out there for about 20 minutes during the time it was in totality.

A couple mistakes, IMHO, that I observe beginning observers to make -

Trusting *too* much in their charts/planetariums. Observation always wins.

Not sticking it out long enough. See from my pics later tonight if you were there at the right time. 20 mins isn't much of an observing session, if you'll forgive my honesty. I'm in about 4hrs now...

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

its no problem, i totally agree with you. The reason i was going in and out so much was because i was freezing lol. I would stay out about 10-20 minutes at a time. Go in for 15 minutes and warm up, then repeat. I actually just came back in now. Watched the last of the shadow disapear.

For my first time seeing one it was a good experience and maybe this has readied me for what i need to be prepared to do during the next one in 3 years lol. (like buying some thermal socks haha)

I look forward to seeing your pic, and anyone else who might be posting them.

Bundling up is important, for sure!

I'm planning to post one or two pics unprocessed, then do some processing. I have over 9GB of images to go through... So I'll get one or two up, then see if I can get my HDR stuff goin'...

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

The Moon was dodging between the clouds all night tonight. I'd give it about 75% overcast or more. It was maddening, I'd get the telescope locked in just in time to have it disappear behind a cloud (the scope I had didn't have one of those fancy electronic control systems).

Because I'm taking astronomy this semester, I spent the night at the observatory at my community college helping out (yes, a community college with an observatory, dome and everything). Because the observatory is open to the public, every time something astronomical happens we can easily get well over 100 visitors in a night. To ease traffic flow in the dome, they had four smaller scopes set up outside. It was my job to man one of them.

It was quite an interesting night as I spent most of the night answering questions and talking to the public. You never really learn a subject until you have to teach it. It was also interesting to see how much and how little the lay public knew about astronomy. Some people were shockingly unaware of many basic concepts of astronomy (i.e. elementary school stuff). Quite depressing really.

I couldn't stay depressed for to long as one of my classmates had the foresight to ask as many of the hot chicks on campus as he could find to go to the observatory tonight. That way, even when the Moon was socked in with clouds, we were still able to observe other celestial bodies.

So, again we are defeated. Just a couple quickies!

Saturn in the left lower corner - the ones with Saturn's moons need some processing first...

http://jlrdesigns.com/astrophotography/eclipse08/eclipse-test-1.jpg

This one was kinda pretty:
http://jlrdesigns.com/astrophotography/eclipse08/eclipse-test-0.jpg

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Sorry, Ann was sleeping with the computer so I couldn't post last night.

Despite a pesssemistic forecast, after watching satellite pix all day, I was pretty optimistic.

I could even see the penumbral darkening just before the Umbra made contact through thin clouds.

The rest of the clouds were gone within 20 minutes of the start of the partial phase, and it was crsip and clear for the remainder of the eclipse, including all of totality.

Wow, that was really a pretty one!

So high in the sky, nice and red shading toward white in the direction closest to the edge of the umbra. It was fun watching that rotate around from upper right to lower left as the closest edge shifted position for the hour.
Even talked to a few people on the phone and showed Saturn and the whole constellation of Leo to them, since it occurred under his front paws.

Quite a memory to hold for the next 3 years!

Thanx, Mother Nature!!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Seriously, MW, it was a spectacular show. I had fun explaining what was going on to people on my block. I kinda attracted some attention when I was standing in the middle of my street to get a better view.

People also got a kick out of knowing that Saturn was close by.
