Never before shown on American television, the final episode of Firefly, 'Objects in Space,' airs on the SciFi Channel in an hour-and-a-half. It is in many respects a prequel to the movie, as it sets up the hunt for River by the Alliance. And introduces the question: What is River that the Alliance wants her so badly?

DVD of Serenity will be available in stores starting December 20th.

Yeah the Serenity had a sneak preview in Auckland on 19 September 2005 and released on 10 November 2005 in NZ. It's time to check the cinemas out!!
A dazzling bluish luminosity from A distant south pacific.

Star, did you catch the flick yet? I thought they did a great job bringing Firefly to the big screen. And I'm hoping they are able to get a sequel. For me, at least, this movie leaves the new Star Wars trilogy way back in the interplanetary dust.

Anyway, it's Friday again on SciFi. As of 10 minutes ago:

From SCIFI.COM | Firefly:

FRIDAY, NOV. 18

"Serenity," Part 2

SERIES PILOT: Mal learns that two of his passengers are fugitives from the Alliance...and the third is also not what he appears to be.

EVERY FRIDAY AT 7/6C

The hunt for the psychic assassin River, which concludes in the movie Serenity, begins here...

I know, every time I browse a NZ website, I see the movie "Serenity" commercial.... you know - the pinnacle of all movies........So anyway, perhaps this weekend there will be me, those Kanji or Hanzi characters and popcorns.......
A dazzling bluish luminosity from A distant south pacific.

Star, how did it go this weekend? The movie is now out of most theaters in the US.

By the way, there's a Firefly mini-marathon on the SciFi Channel tonight:

07:00 PM FIREFLY JAYNESTOWN
08:00 PM FIREFLY OUT OF GAS
09:00 PM FIREFLY ARIEL
10:00 PM FIREFLY WAR STORIES

Synopses follow:

Jaynestown -

Tough and gruff mercenary Jayne mistaken for a local Robin Hood, and honored by a popular ballad? Smuggling mud? The whiskey preacher's power to awe is tied to his scalp? The Bible can be improved and made self-consistent? Though not all of that seems to go together, it nevertheless mixes together to make one of the most entertaining episodes of Firefly.

Out of Gas -

Kaylee, Serenity's intuitive mechanic, long ago warned Mal his ship was in need of a new part. Now that part - the port compression coil's catalyzer - has blown, leaving the transport adrift in deep space. With no real hope of rescue so far out from regular transfer orbits, Serenity's captain conceives a desperate scheme for the crew's survival in which his own life will almost certainly be lost. As the plan is carried out, Mal finds himself alone with recollections of how he first assembled his crew. In contrast to the tragic circumstances of the present, the flashbacks are without exception comic fun. Backstory not provided in the pilot is offered, going back to events taking place before the first episode.

Ariel -

Some of River's mysterious past is unravelled as Serenity's crew stages a bold drug-heist at a hospital on a Core Planet in the heart of the Alliance. Seemingly inhuman operatives for the Alliance, sporting peculiar blue hands and wielding high-tech weapons never shown elsewhere in the series, meanwhile close in on their quarry, River Tam. They cannot succeed, however, unless someone betrays the crew of Serenity...
<</safety_wrapper>

Due to our own juvenile technological civilizations on earth, even though this awesome setting of 500 years down the road, (it can still be in transition between type 0 and type I cilizations) this could well be true about our solar system and making a livelihood through petty crime and transporting people and cargo throughout the outcast of space. Who could have thought this 41 kg gal has slay potency, who maims everyone to make a stand for herself to designate her own game. Only Mr. Whedon himself!!!

Serenity is certainly more appealing and the scripts are absolutely very well written, dramatized and entertained than any of George Lucas' recent releases perhaps it's the latter-day Star Wars epics !!
A dazzling bluish luminosity from A distant south pacific.

Four more from the good people at The SciFi Channel, airing tonight:

11/23/2005 07:00 PM FIREFLY TRASH
11/23/2005 08:00 PM FIREFLY THE MESSAGE
11/23/2005 09:00 PM FIREFLY HEART OF GOLD
11/23/2005 10:00 PM FIREFLY OBJECTS IN SPACE

Trash -

Saffron, Mal's beautiful but deadly ex-wife, returns with a scheme to steal an antique laser weapon, but Saffron is no better as a business partner than she is as a wife, as Mal and others have learned, and keep learning - some lessons bear repeating.

The Message -

The eponymous message takes the form of a question and an old war-buddy, both of which ask where obligation and brotherhood forged in war ends, and one answer given is that even death cannot break such bonds.

Heart of Gold -

A shoot-out at the OK...whorehouse? Selfish mercenary Jayne...volunteering to risk his life for others? One (or more) characters actually getting some? Some sweet old-fashioned vengence and retribution? Beautiful ladies with guns blazing? Yes to all that and more...

Objects in Space -

The finalé wraps up the series with a bounty-hunter putting the crew of Serenity to their ultimate test, and it is the weakest link in the chain of command which will determine whether he succeeds or fails.

The final three were never aired by Fox during the original run of the series.

Another link: Joss Whedon's SERENITY (CHUD.com)

Yes, serak, I hope the small-screen version of TV series Firefly will be as good!
A dazzling bluish luminosity from A distant south pacific.

Star, Amazon is offering the DVDs of the series and the movie at very reasonable prices:

Firefly DVD (Amazon.com) - $26.97

Serenity - Widescreen Edition (Amazon.com) - $16.98

Serenity - Fullscreen Edition (Amazon.com) - $16.98

Glad you enjoyed the movie. The series is excellent, and actually is better at delivering the characters (in smaller stories) than the movie. The movie, being an epic, offers a bigger story. Most of the fans would rather have the series back instead of more movies. But they also love the movie and ain't complaining!

So if you liked the movie, you'll love the series. : )

Announcement:

This thread has been moved from Free Space to the Science Fiction forum by the moderators. Apologies in advance for the duplication of material between this and other threads found in this forum.

Star Wars shall always reign supreme....

For some, of course. Maybe not for all. For some others, there is always the possibility something better may come along. I was there in the theater the day Star Wars: A New Hope first came to life on the big screen. My arm was in a cast (due to the foolish excesses of youth, what else?) and in a considerable amount of pain. From the moment the massive Star Destroyer took over the screen to the moment Leia awarded her heroes with medals of honor, I forgot all about how much the arm hurt. What I'm saying is that I am definitely a fan and always will be.

For me, though, the fun pretty much ends with The Empire Strikes Back and is over before the credits roll on The Return of the Jedi. The second trilogy has its moments, but I would have been happier if Lucas had stopped with Episode VI. If anything, I was more curious about what happened next than what happened before, anyway.

Now, with the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises having run their courses, I nourish the hope that movies based on the Firefly series can fill the void those two series of films have left. Serenity could be the first of a scifi trilogy good enough to rival Star Wars for good old-fashioned scifi adventure. But this is far from likely - they were really quite lucky to even get this movie made. Still, some reviewers do believe Serenity's story-telling flies at a higher altitude than that of Star Wars. All a matter of taste, of course.

Well, being Friday, it's time for a certain regular announcement:

From SCIFI.COM | Firefly:

F

With the movie, there is only so much character development you can add until it interferes with the plot. When you resolve an issue too quickly, many times the meaning and effect gets lost.

Must agree. Fortunately, the SciFi Channel recently ran the entire series (something Fox itself failed to do) as a build-up to the theatrical release of the movie. And is now running the series again prior to the release of the movie on DVD on December 20th. Giving us all a chance to catch episodes we may have missed.

In my own opinion, the series was getting better as it went along. Had it been better supported by its network and given time to find its audience, I think it could have been huge in the world of science fiction, its success rivaling what its creator Joss Whedon enjoyed with his series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Of course, now we'll never know. But at least we have a really cool science fiction movie to show for it. : )
