I saw some trailers for the new Will Smith flick I Am Legend. Anyone heard anything about it ? Supposedly closer to the book than The Omega Man (which I liked) but with Hollywood's redo's these days who knows .... I have to admit I only have a vague recollection of the earlier Vincent Price movie.

Still it looks interesting and I hope they don't butcher it too much.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

My initial thought was no they're not but on reflection you maybe have a point.

i,Robot wasn't bad.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. It's a remake of Omega Man, a 1971 version of the book "I Am Legend" starring Charlton Heston. A very good flick.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/

The director, Francis Lawrence, did Constantine.

The writers have The Cell, Constantine, Cinderella Man, I Robot and Practical Magic in their portfolios.

Oh not so, so not so!.

I liked very much, I Robot. It wasn't the book, but it wasn't irredeemably shallow either.

And Mekquake from Robusters got a non-speaking part!.

"I like Big Jobs!".

Omega man has the meretricious yet enjoyable scenes of "Charlton Heston running through a deserted town with a sub-machinegun" and "Alfresco Clothes shopping as it suits the inner man".

Quite excellent movie, but in no way as good or meaningful as the book.

Very few movies are as good as their source materials, often due to the time limitations of the format and more often because most screenwriters have no respect for them.

I'm tired of seeing "Will Smith Vehicles." These are movies that just capitalize on Will Smith and promote him rather than tell a decent story. They also put him in a role that he isn't suited for, IMO.

To qualify, I liked "Men in Black I" and would have liked "Independence Day" if it had portrayed his character a little differently. He doesn't do "fighter pilot" very well. I was disappointed in "I Robot" because it wasn't much like the book but I did appreciate the story to a certain extent. I did not like Will Smith's character though.

Don't get me wrong, I think Will Smith is an extremely talented guy. But, he does not do the "leading man" role very well. Let's face it, he's not an "Action Hero He-Man" type of actor. He's more of a "regular guy in extraordinary circumstances" type of actor with a large dose of sarcasm and nervous humor thrown in. Charlton Heston he ain't... That's nothing against him as a performer. He does extremely well in that "regular guy-sarcasm-nervous humor" type of role and I think he should stick with that. He doesn't have the screen presence for a different type of role unless he works hard at it and gets some more serious parts to play.

If he want's to branch into something more serious, he needs to take on some more serious, non-comedic roles. I don't know if he's done any. If he has, I'd watch them just to see if he can do it.

I am not looking forward to seeing "I am Legend" especially if it's another comedic/sarcasm/regular-guy Will Smith role. I like him as an actor but, I don't think he can fill Heston's shoes and I think the story demands a character like that.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Out of interest, you say Will Smith isn't "leading man", what did you think of In Pursuit of Happiness?
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. An Ascot is a cravat (old style tie) with wide, square ends. Look and see which applies, but Heston had an affinity for Ascots.

BTW: did you know his real name is John Carter? He couldn't use it because it conflicted with the character in Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "A Princess of Mars". It was in development and thus the conflict, even though it never ended up being made.

Try him in "6 degrees of separation". I thought he was well and away the better man in that.

And I think this is merely a taste thing, because to me, he is the perfect action hero. There is something believable about him that is absent in the testosterone brigade.

Audey Murphey and Charles Upham, were not Arnold and Sly in build nor in bravado or looks either, for that matter. Yet that didn't stop them being the Acme of war-heros, eh?.

Hahaha, that IS interesting.
John Carter , but more likely to bring a rifle, to the sword-fight.

Matheson's I am Legend is a dark, depressing tale. I will walk out of the cinema at the first vampire killing pun......and no doubt they'll be many of them.

Good point. I didn't see that one but a friend of mine told me he was outstanding in it. I want to see it.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

ZeroGeezus - Ever notice how many 70's movies Heston wore a neck scarf in. Omega Man, Soylent Green, Earthquake, and a neck bandage in PotA. Those silk neckerchiefs that were popular in men's fashion back then, this is bugging me, what were they called? Ascots?

Yeah. And the fake turtleneck things were called "Dickies" IIRC.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Looks like there are a number of Will Smith movies I haven't seen. Maybe he's trying to branch out a bit but not getting the PR for it?
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Just saw a preview for I Am Legend on TV and it does NOT look like it's the usual Will Smith vehicle at all.

Very serious looking, and dark.

Yeah, I watched some trailers last night. Looks promising. I tried to come back and post them but SDC was crawling so slow I thought it'd freeze any electrons I may have tried to pass along.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Loved I-Robot, alot.

Just started to see trailers for this movie, it looks really interesting.
My fav part is when he's sleeping in the tub with his dog and his rifle while there's some creepy noises coming from outside his door.
Love it.

Yes, and part of the reason I like the guy, is even in a bleak movie like that, he is a symbol of hope.

There was a throw-away scene in E of the P, where his employers are talking to him, and one says something that in an IceTee movie, would be the scene for really hands-on-the-hips spiel against racist opinions, but , like all WS's movies, it is handled with some aplomb, he just says something sardonicaly cutting and looks his disapproval.
And HIS kids in movies inevitably have friends whos RACE is a side issue.

And I like also how his characters usually have faults, often big ones.

I like him, he can save my world any time he likes.

(Opps, did this just nudge the "Gay Thread" alarm?. Bwahahaha)
