Read any news story about the shuttle being ferried on a 747 from California and you will find the sentence telling you that it costs $1 million to do so.

Considering the technological spinoffs and their resulting boost to the US economy and the weather forecasts and warnings, NASA seems to be the only thing the US government does that makes money.

Maybe the Army should seize the ME oil fields........

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Yep, everyone I've read quotes that fiqure. Its like they're trying to drum it home the extra cost, like its some real bad thing. In my book, safety should come before expense.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

In reply to:

The figure is correct however it it not just the ferry operation that is the cost of the entire recovery effort in California.

That's relatively inexpensive, in that case...

Here in California, it costs $1 billion to build a freeway on-ramp... go figure

Well we didn't describe the ride home as costing $1m. I've seen it in a few places though.

Indeed.

Sadly I've heard in no uncertain terms that a few writers in key positions (AP and Reuters) who are UNDER ORDER to be negative about the Shuttle. I'm not to sure where it's all orginating, but I understand it's based on political lines.

There is a game of "who can write the most negative story" between some wire services that feed nearly all the major US papers.

Bad news sells, as they say.

California and you will find the sentence telling you that it costs $1 million to do so./i>

Depending in your location, many typical homes in California cost that much. The last home on my street went for $1.4 million (and we can't even get cable TV or DSL out here!!).

So maybe they were saying, it only cost $1 million to move the shuttle, isn't that cheap!

Malibu Beach Times: "Shuttle move costs same as yearly poodle clothing allowance shocker!"

"I had no idea it was that cheap to move a Shuttle," said Stacey McStacey of Big House Road, Malibu. "He he, NASA is so cheap, I mean, I saw a woman engineer and she wasn't even wearing Gucci!"

Yes, I know she's an Orbiter...but I wouldn't expect the Malibu Beach Times to get it right

Of course I would gladly accept private and government contributions to my own health and wellness studies too. Kind of like a ride on a 747 accept the money would goto one source not a dozen.

I think I can have a report on the cost of it the day after I recieve all those monies... LOL

SRTF, if you're in Malibu Beach, I'd say the LAST thing you'd be looking at is the newspaper!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

But what they won’t tell you is that in the new highway bill, there is a clause that appropriates hundreds of millions of dollars to construct a bridge longer than the golden gate-just to connect an island of only 50,000 people. Or about the expenditure from a few years ago that set aside $2 million to build a rainforest replica in Iowa….I think Iowa would be better off if the federal government spent $2 million on schools in Iowa instead of building rainforests, and I think the media talking heads should stop playing this up considering that many of them make enough money in a year to pay for several shuttle transportations.
