Hello I am a HUGE fan of the new BSG but their books are not good. Are there any good sci fi book series that involve space exploration, colonization or just in general living in space?

I'm looking for something with a serious & dark tone.. maybe space horror? I have not seen the recent film "Moon" but it looks like something I'd be interested in. And best of all if you are a video gamer, a book based along the lines of Dead Space? If possible, does anyone know of any good book series that are still in the making and worth the investment?

If you want something that feel like a dark soap opera I'd suggest Peter F Hamilton (Nights Dawn Trilogy or Pandoras Star series) For something a little more intelligent I don't think you can go wrong with Alastair Reynolds Revelation Space series.

Oh yeah, and avoid Kevin J Anderson.

I read one and it was dreadful, gave it away to a friend (I warned him but he wanted to read it). He's now so embarressed by it he hides it behind his porn.

Pandors star was excellent. Having issues getting into the nights dawn trilogy though. Not sure what it is. Might be the living space ship thing. Just seems a little off to me.

I'll second (3'rd?) Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained. I'm not sure I'd call then a series but more like 2 halves of a really big novel. I'll do the same for Alastair Reynolds though I'm not sure who'd I'd call more cerebral.

I'd definately say Reynolds was in relation to Hamilton. Hamilton is all about strange alien sex scenes (lots of repressed fantasies there I think, including interspecies (Gorn-Ferengi)) and big space battles.

Reynolds is more a universe where physics plays a role.

Ok, be honest. Which is more fun? Physics or Strange Alien Sex?

I won't jump to any conclusions however. Not on this forum anyway. Maybe this should be a Poll.

Try "The Sentients Of Orion" sereies by Marianne de Pierres.
The 3rd book comes out this week!
They are really well written, great plot, great characters!

If you want some more light hearted satire SF, try The Globulate Trilogy at PlanetSatiety.com or Slabdog.com.

I know you wanted something darker, but if you haven't read David Weber's "Honor Harrington" series, you're missing out on some of the best 'military' sci fi out there, and it's a longer series to, with lots of character growth (Main character goes from ships captain to leading fleet admiral over the series so far) and metaplot.

Or the Miles Vorkosigan books, those are pretty nice too.

I know a lot of sci-fi fans didn't like them but I enjoyed the four books of the Rendesvoux with Rama series by Arthur C Clarke and Gentry Lee
