If you are going to Florida for the launch, the best advice is don't swim in the ocean.
Rats! There is a good chance I am going to have to teach a training session that week up in Dahlgren. Ack. Pffft.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Nooo, teach them about Shuttles and hold it in Florida

Shuttles would probably be much more interesting than training them on these programs.

Wayne

p.s. I did get some answers to the cameras on the B-57's from the program manager. He provided useful context to me based on an "out of the blue" email.

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

For those who have not been to the Space Coast before of course the main attraction will be KSC and the launch. But if you have time, there is one place that is a little lower profile, that I highly recommend.

Make sure you go up to Titusville and visit the Space Walk of Fame museum. It is run by a bunch of volenteers (lots of retired space workers) and the museum is brilliant! Lots of incredible donated space items and memorabilia cramed to the roof, including Al Shepards' Corvette! You could spend hours wandering and not so commercial, a real nice 'feel' to the place.

http://www.spacewalkoffame.com/index.html

Oh, and do try to do the "Then and Now" tour of CCAFS from the KSC visitors centre!
Wayne
If you go, I will be set up at the Walgreen's at the corner of US-1 (Washington Ave) and Highway 50. Just look for the large blue telescope.

Territorial Army (which I'm in) called up following terrorist attack on the UK.

My trip's cancelled as a result, nothing I can do. Heartbroken, but more important things going on over here

Hope you all understand. Sorry, Chris.

I'll mail everyone I arranged to meet tonight when I get back in. No idea when that'll be.

Where is the best off site location to see the launch from, titusville, if so, where there, the park?. My wife surprised me with airfare/hotel/rental car on tuesday, so obviously all the KSC tickets were sold before I knew I was going.

This is the first time Ive gone to see a launch (Last time I was there, the shuttle launch 2 days before we arrived, and landed 3 days after we left *sigh*), and I want a good vantage point

Also, when should I get there to get a good spot? Im not sure if i need to get there at like 4am, or what.

Thanks
-Eric

Thanks guys.

Just got back in from patrol with the British Territorial Army (bit like the US National Guard). Spent most of it at York rail station. We had 30 men - two regular army as commanding officers, a bomb disposal unit from Catterick Garrison. Did not help that one of them recently came back from............................Florida

Get Discovery uphill and I'll try and aim for Atlantis on STS-121.

Yea, I would suggest the northern causeway (406) too. The space walk of fame is there as well, a nice place to watch if you want a park. Expect crowds.

-Ben

Assuming Dennis stays away from KSC, does anyone have an idea of what impact he might have on my schedule LA to Orlando flight this coming Sunday morning?

"Sunday am the hurricane, which is what....300 miles in diameter, will be directly between LA and MCO in Orlando. If you are on Delta, they may be going by way of Atlanta which should be better for you."

Actually, looking at the various aviation weather sources, it looks like the weather isn't going to be too bad high up. Hurricanes can climb into the FL500 range, but its looking like that isn't the case with Denis. Winds and turbulence at FL200 and up seem to be pretty normal for the forecast period. The only red flag is convective SIGMETs in the area, but those cover a pretty small area.

Don't get me wrong, there will be delays all over, because planes that need to land/takeoff through it can't, but any plane that just needs to go by it (like KLAX to KMCO, or my KORD to KMCO) should be able to go over/arround, at least that is the picture I'm getting from the data I have available to me.

-Eric

Thanks for the travel observations guys, I hope for smooth sailing. Well, I fly out of Melbourne (Australia) in about 12 hrs (8:30 pm Sat' EDT) and hopefully around 24 hrs later (after many time zones, the international date line and a few Bloody Marys), I'll be in Orlando! Then a couple of hours to the beach...

Lets have a role call on who is planning to be there for
the launch?

Peter

Well, I was there for the launch attempt on the 13th……say no more.
Anyway, after 27 hours travelling, I am back in Australia, disappointed yes but enjoyed the experience all the same. Speaking to many people they thought there were more people there for the launch attempt than they’d seen in many years. I was at the press site and they had 1,250 press in attendance by 8:30 that morning and the place was packed when the scrub came through.

A lot of high profile people there too, Gene Kranz, John Glenn and all kinds of politicians, including Bill Nelson.

I did have a very enjoyable breakfast with "our man on the inside", Mr SG. Fascinating guy and a real gentleman, and like so many of the people that I have met who work at KSC, he really has a passion for the job that goes far beyond just something to pay the bills.

Well, I do hope she gets off to a successful flight next week, I gave it my best shot, I hope some of you can be there and share with us the experience!
Since the launch is around 10:39AM, does anyone know when will they would open the KSC visitors center for Tuesday? They opened at 9:30AM on the 13th, I imagine they would want to open a earlier than that if the launch is in the morning.
