Proton-M First Stage:

Six RD-275M Engines burning N[sub]2[/sub]O[sub]4[/sub]/UDMH. RD-275M is a further developed version from originally used RD-253 engine. Central tank contains the oxidizer and six outer tanks the fuel.

Proton-M Fourth Stage:

This launch is using Breeze-M upper stage. It consists from two modules, donut shaped add-on tank (which is jettisonable) and core module (Breeze-KM) with one RD-2000 engine burning N[sub]2[/sub]O[sub]4[/sub]/UDMH. It can be started up to 8 times during the flight which provides excellect accuracy to payload orbit placement.

Proton M with AMC-4R (SES-1) Satellite Rolled Out To Launch Pad
20.04.2010

Baikonur Cosmodrome. Today the Proton launch vehicle with the AMC-4R (SES-1) spacecraft has been rolled out from the technological fueling station (Area 92) to launch pad (Area 200). The launcher has been erected vertically onto the launch table. The Russian State Commission yesterday gave the go ahead for the rollout operations.

Final pre-launch processing of the Proton LV and launch facilities will take three days.

The lift off of the Proton M launch vehicle with AMC-4R satellite is scheduled for April 24.

Russian Proton launcher successfully lifted off from Baikonur`s pad 200 today. The Proton carries US telecommunication satellite AMC-4R aboard.
The lift-off occurred precisely on time, at 15:19 MSK. In several hours (00:17 MSK) the satellite will be separated from the Breeze-M upper stage.

AMC-4R Reaches the Orbit. The Spacecraft is Now Under Customer's Control

Roscosmos expert groups yesterday launched Proton rocket with US telecommunication satellite AMC-4R aboard.
The lift-off occurred precisely on time, at 15:19 MSK. At 00:17 MSK, April 25, the satellite separated from the Breeze-M upper stage and reached the targeted obit. The injection by Breeze-M was carried out by 4 firings of the upper stage’s propulsion system.
AMC-4R is now under customer’s control. The spacecraft is operated by SES WORLD SKIES, which currently tests AMC-4R systems.

About SES-1 - AMC-4R mess :

Orbital Sciences Corporation announced in May 2007 that it has received an order from SES AMERICOM for as many as five new satellites over a multi-year period. Orbital stated that SES AMERICOM has placed a firm order for two new satellites, the first designated as AMC-5R and the second a ground spare that will be launched to another orbital location as a future replacement satellite.

There was some weird black smoke coming out from the right side of the first stage, and then later in flight there was at least one flash of light in the exhaust plume, but everything else was normal. What was that ?

Actually that is a brown smoke... And it happens every single Proton launch. I don't know what it is, but I suspect it is produced by APU or something similar. Rather soon every at launch it creates big brown cloud and immediately stabilizes to faint brown line.

If somebody knows what it is, please share your knowledge.

I checked other launches, well, at least one, and i didn't see that smoke, that's why i'm curious.
I don't remember seeing that anywhere else either.
Mission control wasn't disturbed by that smoke, nobody peeped about it - 'polyot normalniy' ..

I have looked Proton launches very closely and that dark brown smoke is always there... However since it comes only one corner of the rocket it is not visible from all angles.

I saw also one animation from Proton launch sometime ago and that brown smoke vere present even that one.

You can see the brown smoke also in this animation, so it is there for purpose. Still I'd like to know why Proton farts it out.
