Race to the moon closer than we thought?

I have wondered why the Soviets didn't gamble and try to launch a manned Soyuz 7K-L1 before Apollo 8. This very interesting article suggest that perhaps they did... and more.<br /><br />http://www.astronautix.com/articles/theghoax.htm

I found it interesting but don't really have much to add. Certainly fears of a Soviet circumlunar attempt played a big part in the decision to launch Apollo 8 as a lunar orbit mission.

I found the podsadka concept interesting, unmanned heavy lift with crew launched on safer smaller man rater vehicle.<br /><br />Now where have I seen that idea recently... <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" />
