Without a doubt..The Prisoner. The best television pre-1980...post 1980.

Other great shows were, as mentioned, the Twilight zone and Outer Limits...another was 'The Avengers'.

A show I liked as a kid but was kind of corny was 'The Time Tunnel'. I wish I had never seen a rerun as an adult as it took away a bit of the magic memories.

Yes, Space 1999 was good...and the principal actress was on another great show, the original Mission Impossible.

I love the early Gerry Anderson shows - and of course, am an early years Dr. Who fan. Here is some trivia though. When reminiscing among friends, I often ask "can anyone remember Phoenix 5?" And no one else I have ever met has remembered seeing this show. So before I elaborate I'll ask it here. Can anyone remember Phoenix 5?

I've never heard of that one and I thought I knew most TV trivia. So I went on a google search and it was The Pheonix Five. I did, however find out why I've never heard about it, it was an Aussie series that I don't think ever made it stateside...So, tell us about it....

Ok. I was a young kid when I watched it. It was a low budget one season series filmed in 1969 and aired in 1970. It must have repeated a few times and then been consigned to the archives forever! I am amazed you found info on it so quickly – so I did a search and found a reference too: http://www.australiantelevision.net/phoenixfive.html

I only have the vaguest memory and do not think it was very good. I remember there was a robot prop on which they used ordinary household light switches – and two bad aliens that had rock bases, with their upper halves being transparent silhouettes – one flashing red the other green. The spaceship was shaped like the dune skimming vehicle in Star Wars and did jerky manoeuvres obviously made by dangling it from a string. I’d love to see it again though!

heh heh...i still can sing the english theme song!
yes..that was a memorable series. the animation is aged now but not the story...very human...

--------------------------------------------------------
"I used to love the Japanese cartoon series "Star Blazers" as a kid. So glad someone else remembered this series. Starlost was what I was going to nominate. It starred Keir Dullea of 2001 fame--who can forget him rendered as a sentient fetus, after all?

Whatever you might say about Starlost in its execution, conceptually it was out ahead of anything else at the time, and most of what has come after. Talk about high concept. Too bad they felt the need to make it episodic. It would have been perfect as a miniseries. In fact it would make a great Scifi channel miniseries now, and a sight better than most of the gimcracky ones they're doing these days (okay, I'm still bearing a grudge about them abruptly cancelling Farscape, Peacekeeper Wars wrapup notwithstanding).

I watched UFO when I was very young and thought it was way cool. Did they ever show what was in the UFO's? I forget.

Yes, they did. Well, kind of.

Abducted humans, who were brainwashed. Why was never explained. And the suits they wore were filled with a highly oxygenated liquid. Most of the ones that got captured expired messily, once the helmets were removed - making the transition back to air breathing.

There was also an episode in which one of the UFO crew themselves were captured, and reappeared a few episodes later. They did survive going from the liquid to air.

S'all I remember on that part.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Now I remember, vaguely. This series might be a good one to do a remake on.

Question back at you (I don't remember): What was the name of the organization that hunted down the UFO's?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Some racy outfits for that day and age... maybe that's why I liked the show.

Yeah.

I used to like it - I was about 12 - because it was SF and set in the UK also. Kind of different. What can I say...I'm an Anglophile.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Very good.

Me, soon to be a Planet. Probably tonight.
I was once much higher than that, stopped posting for a long time - and the crash wiped me out. Had to start from scratch.

Another old, good series. A bit hokey, but: "Land of the Giants."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Yeah, I started in 2002 but lurked for a long time. Mostly came here for the Galileo and then Cassini info and pics. Quite the cliquey website. Most people just ignored me back then so I didn't post. Enjoy the planetary missions discussions.

Then I must have just missed you by months, because I ceased to post in 2001. The economy did me in, had to go out and hustle. I missed it, but posting on SDC wasn't one of my top priorities at the time.

If you were there then, you (of course) remember Project_Orion. I was there when he started his nonsense. A whole bunch us us used to argue with him, but he didn't like me much, and absolutely hated Yale.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I remember the poster but not much of what he spouted. There's alot of that around. Kinda fun to observe some of it though.

Clearly then, you never interacted with him. He was probably one of the top 5 most evil people who have ever haunted SDC. Ancient history now, though.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

good riddens.

Oddly though, he's reached a sort of psuedo-legendary status. We won't be able to tell until all the old-timers go. He got punted (repeatedly I hear) shortly before I started wandering around.

Btw, I feel like stalking you Yev! I must've still been posting then, because I clearly remember your former username. You'd pop in once in a while, and we'd all go "Hey, good to see you!"

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

It may have been a little earlier than that, but not much. I definetly joined up my freshman year in college.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
