I have heard about the Pioneer anomaly before but ran across it again in an unrelated article. I was wondering what some of our members opinions were about this effect. It appears that alot of effort has gone into eliminating many of the suggested causes. Although it has not been proven to be a natural effect, the data has been mined to a degree that it is a probability to be considered.

I think the consensus so far is that we don't have enough data to really determine what it is. It shows up in the same way on both spacecraft and has appeared in two other probes. Likely a dedicated mission is needed to really pin it down.

But if it is proved to be an unknown effect upon the space craft I believe it would send more than a few physicists back to the chalk board.
