www.federalspace.ru : Soyuz TMA-01M Prelaunch Campaign is Nominal – Roscosmos Head Anatoly Perminov
:: 07.10.2010

Yesterday, during the meeting of the State Board at Baikonur, Roscosmos Head Anatoly Perminov explained that launch campaign of the Soyuz TMA-01M vehicle is nominal. The vehicle is slated for launch at 03.10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Roscosmos Head also noted that some journalists by mistake recalled the situation with Soyuz TMA-20 to be launched in Dec. linking it with the current launch for some reason.
Anatoly Perminov asked president and general designer of RSC-Energia Vitaly Lopota to provide his comments on the situation with Soyuz TMA-20.
«We detected a problem during Soyuz TMA-20 unloading, some doubts with integrity of the transport container», Lopota explained.
He added that no damage was detected on the vehicle.
“There was no damage on the outer surface of the vehicle. However we decided to set up a commission which will make special investigation, as we are dealing with the human space launch and we can’t afford risking”, RSC-E chief said.
In any case, the vehicle will be launched in Dec.
«We are going to launch Soyuz TMA-20 in Dec timeframe, in line with the schedule. The commission is to complete its work by the end of Oct. in order to provide their proposals and solutions to the State Board”, Lopota concluded.

SDC : Russian Soyuz to Launch New Space Station Crew Today
By Clara Moskowitz
SPACE.com Senior Writer

10:00 am ET

An American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts are poised to launch to the International Space Station tonight on a Russian rocket.

The trio is slated to lift off Thursday (Oct. 7) at 7:10 p.m. EDT (2310 GMT) from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome. The spaceflyers will ride a new model of the tried-and-true Russian Soyuz spacecraft, the TMA-01M, which features new guidance, navigation, control and data processing systems, and an improved cooling device for the electronics.

The crew is launching just days after the 53rd anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the world's first man-made satellite, which occurred on Oct. 4, 1957. Indeed, their Soyuz will even blast off from the very same launch pad.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka are set to take up long-term posts as members of the station's Expedition 25 crew. Kelly has a twin brother, Mark, who is also an astronaut and is due to fly aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-134 mission in February.

The new station crew is set to dock at the orbiting outpost's rooftop Poisk module on Saturday at 8:02 p.m. EDT (0002 GMT Sunday). They will join the outpost's existing Expedition 25 crew – station commander Doug Wheelock of NASA and flight engineers Fyodor Yurchikhin of Russia and Shannon Walker of NASA.

In November, half of the station's crew will return to Earth and Kelly will take command of the outpost to begin the Expedition 26 mission.

"It's a real privilege to be part of this crew and to be part of something that has been such a successful program to date – the International Space Station," Kelly said during a recent press briefing. "We're finishing up the assembly of the space station and it's really time to start ramping up the science we do."

On Friday morning, a Russian Soyuz spacecraft will launch from Baikonur on the Kazakstan steppe, heading for the International Space Station. On board will be two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut, Scott Kelly.

From next year, the Soyuz will be the only way for Americans to get into orbit, because the last space shuttle flight will be in June 2011 at the latest - and no replacement will be ready for at least five years.

Daniel Sandford is at the Baikonur cosmodrome for the launch and has been watching the preparations.

www.nasa.gov : New Crew Members Set for Saturday Arrival
The Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft is safely in orbit and carrying Flight Engineers Scott Kelly, Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka to the International Space Station. They launched Thursday at 7:10 p.m. EDT (Friday, Kazakhstan time) from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazkhstan. They will dock Saturday at 8:02 p.m. to the Poisk module and join Expedition 25 Commander Doug Wheelock and Flight Engineers Shannon Walker and Fyodor Yurchikhin.
...
While awaiting their new crew mates, the current station residents continue their station maintenance, training and science activities.

Wheelock and Yurchikhin continue troubleshooting a treadmill in the Zvezda service module. Reassembling the treadmill earlier in the week proved difficult after they performed inspections and checkouts as part of its six-month maintenance schedule. The two crew members worked with ground teams in Houston and Moscow to return the exercise device back to operation. The station commander also worked to replace equipment inside the Destiny laboratory’s Combustion Integrated Rack.

Walker worked on spacesuits in the U.S. Quest airlock to clean cooling loops and inspect harnesses. She also trained with 400 mm and 800 mm cameras to prepare for photographing space shuttle Discovery’s heat shield when the shuttle arrives in November. She practiced taking pictures of Earth landmarks as part of her training with the two cameras.

As part of the ongoing Crew Earth Observations experiment, station crew members photograph Earth’s features for research by ground specialists. One target for Friday included Peru’s most active volcano, Ubinas Volcano, with ash and debris extending more than 10 kilometers from the center of it.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2010
The Soyuz spacecraft carrying three new residents for the space station is scheduled for docking Saturday evening at 8:02 p.m. EDT (0002 GMT).

The automated rendezvous sequence aboard the Russian-built crew transport capsule will begin about 5:42 p.m. EDT to control the activities via autopilot.

The day's first key engine firing is planned for 5:59 p.m. and another impulse is expected around 5:21 p.m. EDT, followed within minutes by activation of the Kurs rendezvous equipment on both the Soyuz and space station to guide the linkup.

The two spacecraft should be within 60 miles of each other by 6:45 p.m., closing to less than 10 miles by 7:10 p.m.

The television camera on the nose of Soyuz will be turned on at 7:17 p.m. to provide views of the docking.

A series of maneuvers between 7:25 and 7:33 p.m. will dramatically slow the Soyuz's closure rate, ultimately leading to the spacecraft beginning a flyaround of the space station to align with the Poisk module's docking port.

After a stationkeeping hold by the Soyuz to ensure all is in readiness for docking, the spacecraft will commence final approach at 7:51 p.m. for docking about 11 minutes later. Soyuz commander Alexander Kaleri will be standing by to take over manual flying of the spacecraft if required.

The linkup should occur at 8:02 p.m. EDT, shortly before an orbital sunset and two days, 51 minutes after liftoff.

The hatch opening and welcoming ceremony aboard the station is expected around 11 p.m. EDT.

NASA TV coverage begins at 7:30p EDT, 23:30 GMT. Watch live: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv
