From the International Space Station, views of Hurricane Igor on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, and again on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 as it churned west across the Atlantic Ocean. On Sunday, Igor increased in strength to a category 4 hurricane with winds of up to 150 miles an hour.

Seeing the blue water down through the eye of the storm is so surreal. I can scratch that off my bucket list. Go quietly, Igor, and remember what peace there may be in silence…

Cameras on the International Space Station captured new video of the three hurricanes in the Atlantic and the Bay of Campeche on Sept. 17, 2010, from an altitude of 225 miles. Hurricane Julia was moving west-northwest across the central Atlantic and weakening with winds of 85 miles an hour. Hurricane Igor was moving northwest across the western Atlantic with winds of 120 miles an hour, posing a threat to Bermuda over the weekend into Monday. Hurricane Karl blossomed overnight into a major Category 3 storm with winds of 120 miles an hour and could strengthen further before it makes landfall over the western coast of Mexico near Veracruz late Friday night.

Astronauts on the International Space Station took in this view of the north coast of the Caspian Sea and two river deltas in Kazakhstan and Russia on September 11, 2010. The larger delta (image middle) is that of the Volga River, which appears prominently in sunglint—light reflected off a water surface back towards the observer—and the smaller, less prominent delta is the Ural River (lower left).

The smoke plume appears to rise out of coastal marsh vegetation in the Ural River delta, rather than a city or oil storage facility. Although even small fires produce plumes that are long, bright, and easily visible from space, the density of the smoke in this plume—which stretches 350 kilometers (217 miles)—suggests it was a significant fire. The smoke was thick enough near the source to cast shadows on the Caspian Sea surface below. Lines mark three separate pulses of smoke: the most recent, nearest the source, extends directly south from the coastline. With time, plumes become progressively more diffuse. The oldest pulse appears thinnest, casting no obvious shadows.

This radar Envisat image features Russia’s Volga Delta and the Caspian Sea. The Volga River (dark) rises northwest of Moscow and extends southward some 3700 km through the whole central part of the country where it pours into the Caspian, forming a delta of about 800 smaller waterways.

The Volga Delta is considered one of the world’s most dynamic deltas because of its remarkably complicated hydrographic network. Its winding channels, marshes and wetlands provide a comfortable home to a rich variety of fauna and flora species.

More than 70 000 fish species inhabit its waters, making it one of the best places to fish in Russia and earning it the nickname 'the 24-hour bite' among locals. Since the area provides habitat for many migrating birds, it is designated as a Wetland of International Importance.

Expedition 25 Commander Doug Wheelock and Flight Engineers Shannon Walker and Fyodor Yurchikhin began their day aboard the International Space Station by participating in Friday’s planning conference with flight control teams on Earth and performing some routine morning inspections.

Wheelock then performed maintenance on the station’s treadmill, also known as T2, in the Tranquility node. T2 needed to be removed earlier this week to access the back of the Water Recovery System rack, which required the installation of a new T-hose on the system’s Water Processing Apparatus.

Walker worked with the EarthKam experiment, updating its software and performing an operational checkout.

Flight Engineer Fyodor Yurchikhin worked in the Russian segment of the station, conducting routine maintenance and monitoring its systems.

Throughout the day, the crew had time set aside for Earth observation and photography. The targets for Friday included Dili, East Timor; Baghdad, Iraq; Asmara, Eritrea; Bujumbura, Burundi; and Mount Rainier, Wash.

Wheelock and Walker participated in an in-flight educational event Wednesday, talking with students from Parker Elementary School, Johnston Middle School and Westbury High School in Houston. Walker, the first native Houstonian astronaut, attended all three schools.

Over the weekend, the crew members will complete their daily physical exercise routines to counteract the effects of long-term exposure to weightlessness in space. They also will enjoy some off-duty time, continue regular maintenance duties and have an opportunity to speak with family members.

Three new Expedition 25 crew members are preparing for their launch aboard the new Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft. Flight Engineers Scott Kelly, Oleg Skripochka and Alexander Kaleri are in their crew quarters in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, training and exercising before their Oct. 7 launch. They are scheduled to dock to the International Space Station Oct. 9 returning the orbiting laboratory to six-member crew operations.

The International Space Station Increment 25 are ending their first full week on the orbital outpost, as specialists on the ground continue their investigation into the events leading up to the failure of the GPRVs (Gas Pressure Regulation Valves) in April and Pump Module (PM) in July. Engineers are also evaluating the ISS’s long-term module configuration, and future payloads to be launched aboard SpaceX’s Dragon vehicle.

Yest kasaniya! Soyuz TMA-01M/24S docked successfully last evening at 8:01pm EDT at the MRM2 "Poisk" module zenith port, 1 min ahead of schedule, on Soyuz orbit #33 (DO1), 5 min before local sunset. This doubles the station crew size to 6 persons and brings the total number of currently docked Russian VVs (visiting vehicles) to 4:
* Soyuz TMA-01M/24S (#701) @ MRM2 "Poisk" zenith,
* Soyuz TMA-19/23S (#229) @ MRM1 "Rassvet"
* Progress M-05M/37P (#405) @ DC-1 nadir
* Progress M-07M/39P 39P (#407) @ SM aft.

It was also the 67th Russian flight to ISS (out of a total of 103 missions).

At wake-up, FE-5 Yurchikhin was joined by FE-1 Kaleri & FE-2 Skripochka to conduct, by way of handover, the regular daily early-morning check of the aerosol filters at the Russian Elektron O2 generator which Maxim Suraev had installed on 10/19/09 in gaps between the BZh Liquid Unit and the oxygen outlet pipe (filter FA-K) plus hydrogen outlet pipe (filter FA-V). [The three cosmonauts again inspect the filters before bedtime tonight, currently a daily requirement per plan, with photographs to be taken if the filter packing is discolored.]

Kaleri's morning inspection today included the weekly checkup behind ASU/toilet panel 139 in the SM (Service Module) on a fluid connector (MNR-NS) of the SM-U urine collection system, looking for potential moisture.

In the framework of Bioecology experiment, International Space Station cosmonauts perform experiments with ginseng.
The boxes with the plant cells arrived at the station last Sunday, aboard Soyuz TMA-M space vehicle, with the expedition 25 crew.
The experiment is led by Biokhimmash company, responsible for biotechnological science in the ISS (Bioecology, Bioemulsion, Biotrek, Ginseng-2 experiments).
It will help the doctors to create new medicines to fight against cancer and other serious illnesses. In addition, scientists note that the ginseng substance may be applied for food and cosmetics production.
Further on, the data obtained in the experiment will provide the opportunity to develop a museum of producent cultures in the ISS, to be used in inter-planetary missions.

Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake also toured the Johnson Space Center's Space Vehicle Mockup Facility with veteran astronaut Steve Robinson, and got a ride in NASA's shuttle motion-base simulator. The band, from Hanna, Alberta and now based in Vancouver, B.C., was in Houston for two concert appearances.

Madagascar is so beautiful and so unique, but seeing the streams choked with silt as a result of inland deforestation really saddens me. The Expedition 25 crew members of the International Space Station prepared for the arrival of space shuttle Discovery and conducted an emergency drill Friday, capping the completion of their first full workweek as a six-member crew.

After their morning prep work and a daily planning conference with flight control teams around the world, Commander Doug Wheelock and Flight Engineers Alexander Kaleri, Oleg Skripochka, Scott Kelly, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Shannon Walker spoke with high school students visiting the Russian mission control center. The students are participants of the 18th International Space Olympiad conducted by the Korolev Municipal Committee for Education and RSC Energia.

The maneuver is to be assisted by 8 attitude thrusters of the Progress M-07M cargo vehicle attached to the Zvezda instrumentation compartment. The engines will be started at 23:41 Moscow time (19:41 GMT). Estimated value of the burn is 0.5 mps. As a result of the maneuver which is to last 228,7 sec, the altitude of the station shall become 0.9km higher, or to achieve 353,3 km.
The operation is aimed at providing favorable conditions for further docking to the station of Russian Progress M-08M and US Discovery STS-133 to be launched on Oct. 27 and Nov. 1, respectfully.

NASA astronaut and International Space Station Commander Doug Wheelock became the first person to "check in" from space Oct. 22 using the mobile social networking application Foursquare. Wheelock's check in to the International Space Station launched a partnership between NASA and Foursquare to connect its users to the space agency, enabling them to explore the universe and discover Earth.

Foursquare users "check in" to venues wherever they go, using the service to find friends nearby, get helpful tips about the places they're visiting, and be challenged and rewarded for experiencing new things.

"Check-ins from around the world have been cool, but this blew my mind! We're psyched to partner with NASA to help users explore the space program and the universe," said Dennis Crowley, chief executive officer and co-founder of Foursquare.

When Wheelock checked in to the International Space Station venue using Foursquare's mobile site aboard the orbiting laboratory, he received a message that revealed a new Foursquare badge.

"You are now 220 miles above Earth traveling at 17,500 mph and unlocked the NASA Explorer Badge! Show this badge and get a free scoop of astronaut ice cream."

When Wheelock completes his mission and returns to Earth at the end of November, the NASA Explorer badge will be available for Foursquare users to earn.

The partnership also features a completely customized homepage for NASA where the agency will provide official tips and information about the nation's space program in locations throughout the United States.

NASA's work ranges from proving flight technologies to creating capabilities for sustainable human and robotic exploration to exploring Earth, the solar system and the universe beyond to developing critical enabling technologies such as the space shuttle and conducting science in orbit aboard the International Space Station. Through this partnership, when Foursquare users check in to NASA sites, they will discover interesting things that happen at each of the agency's locations.

Wheelock launched to the space station as a flight engineer for the Expedition 24 crew on June 15. On Sept. 22, he assumed command of the orbiting laboratory and Expedition 25. During his time in space, he and astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson conducted three spacewalks to replace a faulty cooling pump module on the station's backbone, known as the truss. Additionally, the Expedition 24 and 25 crew members continue work on more than 100 microgravity experiments in human research, biology and biotechnology, physical and materials sciences, technology development, and Earth and space sciences.

Expedition 25 Flight Engineer Fyodor Yurchikhin closed and performed leak checks on the hatch between the International Space Station and the ISS Progress 37 cargo ship Friday, completing preparations for the craft’s undocking.

The Progress is scheduled to undock from the Pirs docking compartment Monday at 10:25 a.m. EDT. It will spend three weeks orbiting a safe distance from the station to enable Russian engineers to conduct technology experiments before being deorbited Nov. 15.

The undocking of Progress 37 sets the stage for the launch of the new ISS Progress 40 cargo ship on Wednesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The new Progress is loaded with 1,918 pounds of propellant, 1,100 pounds of oxygen, 498 pounds of water and 2,804 pounds of food, spare parts and supplies for the Expedition 25 crew. It will dock to the station’s Pirs docking compartment Oct. 30.

A new technology demonstration produced the first quart, or liter, of water for the station’s water recycling system overnight. The Sabatier system uses a technology developed by 1912 Nobel Prize winner Paul Sabatier to extract water from the byproducts of the station’s Oxygen Generation System and Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly. The system can produce up to 530 gallons (2,000 liters) of water each year. The system was integrated into the Water Recovery System on the space station last week and checkout was completed this week. The Sabatier process involves using a nickel catalyst to interact with hydrogen and carbon dioxide at elevated temperatures and pressures to produce water and methane. The water is retained for recycling processes, and the methane is vented overboard. The demonstration is a joint effort of NASA and Hamilton Sundstrand.

Flight Engineer Shannon Walker continued her work with the Japanese experiment HydroTropi. The botanical experiment takes place in the Kibo laboratory and studies how plants, such as a cucumber, grow at a molecular level in microgravity. Data obtained from the results may lead to significant advancements in agricultural production on Earth.


ISS025-E-007772 (18 Oct. 2010) --- NASA astronaut Shannon Walker, Expedition 25 flight engineer, works with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) experiment HydroTropi (Hydrotropism & Auxin-Inducible Gene Expression in Roots Grown under Microgravity Conditions) in the Kibo laboratory of the International Space Station.

Commander Doug Wheelock performed a periodic fitness evaluation on Flight Engineer Scott Kelly.

Wheelock also deactivated the Atmosphere Revitalization rack in the Tranquility module to work with the low-temperature loop quick disconnects there. He also worked with the Harness Development Test Objective, which is evaluating harnesses for use with the COLBERT treadmill. The harness applies pressure that causes a crew member’s footfalls to mimic Earth gravity as closely as possible, as a countermeasure against bone density loss and muscle degradation in microgravity.


ISS025-E-008371 (20 Oct. 2010) --- NASA astronaut Doug Wheelock, Expedition 25 commander, uses Neurospat hardware to perform a science session with the European Space Agency PASSAGES experiment in the Columbus laboratory of the International Space Station. PASSAGES is designed to test how astronauts interpret visual information in weightlessness. It aims at studying the effects of microgravity on the use of the 'Eye-Height' strategy for estimating allowed actions in an environment, and whether this could possibly decrease after a long exposure to weightlessness.

Flight Engineers Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka configured audio on the orbital complex’s communication systems.

As the newest inhabitants of the orbital complex, Kaleri, Skripochka and Kelly spent time orienting themselves to their surroundings.


ISS025-E-008196 (19 Oct. 2010) --- NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, Expedition 25 flight engineer, uses a still camera to photograph the topography of a point on Earth from a window in the Cupola of the International Space Station.

Space shuttle Discovery will launch Nov. 1 to begin the STS-133 mission the space station. On the orbiter’s final spaceflight, the crew members will install the Permanent Multipurpose Module and deliver important spare parts to the station along with the Express Logistics Carrier-4 and Robonaut 2.

NASA astronaut and International Space Station Commander Doug "Wheels" Wheelock became the first person to "check in" from space using the mobile social networking application Foursquare on Oct. 22. Wheelock's check in to the space station launches a partnership between NASA and Foursquare to connect its users to the space agency, enabling them to explore the universe and discover Earth.

International Space Station has beaten a record by Mir station many years ago. The ISS has become the longest habitable space outpost ever built.
The previous record was set by Russian orbital station Mir. The crews were permanently working in Mir from Sept. 8, 1989, till August 28, 1999, within 3641 days, or about 10 years. However, this figure includes also the time spent for many relocations of Soyuz-TM vehicles.
The new record was set by the ISS on Oct. 22, at 11:13 MSK. The crews have been permanently flying in the ISS since Nov. 2, 2000.
Thus, the ISS will also celebrate the 10th jubilee of its first expedition this year.
On Nov. 2, 2000, ISS-1 commanded by William Shepherd, with Sergey Krikalev and Yury Gidzenko, arrived at the station.
