It's not a warhead.
It's a mass of material (think a can of spam), which won't even make orbit.

It it hits, it does, if it doesn't it crashes in the ocean, much like the satellite.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Hi bobblebob,

Yes, its tip is a condensed mass, not an explosive. The missile works on kinetic energy, not explosives.

Also as MeteorWayne correctly says, it BARELY makes it out of the atmosphere, let
alone orbit. It will be on a balistic trajectory, not achieving orbit.

This is a lot like the THAAD tests, except this is from the ocean.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. But it could give rise to some contract company using explosives tech to do trick and customize a mechanism for satellites.

"SCE to AUX" - John Aaron, curiosity pays off

Did spot it overhead very close to the correct time. Brighter than I expected (~ +1), and very fast as very low satellites are tend to be.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Hi All,

As some of you may know, long-time Uplinker "mattblack" wears another hat in the real world as Spokesperson for New Zealand's Spaceflight Association. I'm sure he won't mind me drawing your attention to an appearance he made on NZ's premiere news and information radio station "Newstalk ZB" this morning, concerning this bird.

You can listen to what he had to say at the following link ... mattblack on the spy sat. If you choose to save the hour long file to your computer, you can go directly to Matt's interview at approx 25:05.

Nice one Matt, you spoke well!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Looks like I might get a chance to see it on this next orbit. The skies are almost crystal-clear, so we'll see how this ends up. Looks like I need to be outside in about an hour. Still a lot of light left in the sky, however....

Yeah, I didn't get a chance to see it, too. The skyglow is so bright here you probably couldn't see anything down to 1 mag anyways...

dougbaker, did you see it this evening? I didn't catch it. The moon was really bright, and the pass was supposed to be real low in the NW, and dim because it would have been backlit. Orbit decay should have brought it by a little earlier and closer than the prediction.

Don't think we will have another chance.

Just gotta luv Fox news channel. They are reporting that this action will cost the taxpayers $40-60 million. Duh the money has already been spent. Those guys on the ship are going to get paid whether they fire the missle or not.

They're correct; the three SM3's to be used for this shoot-down had to be modified, which is what the $40-$60 million reflects: $10-$15 million each for the missile mods plus incidentals.

It was much brighter than expected, I estimated +1 last night, but the more I think about it, it was closer to 0 mag.

As for the constellation, here in NJ it went from one horizon to the other, nearly overhead, so it went through quite a few.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Nice one Matt, you spoke well!

Minor correction in that it's an SM-3 not an SM-2. It's track record in tests has been very good. Just a heads up, tonights shootdown may be delayed by bad weather in the Pacific, and Heavens Above has updated the orbit based on 6:34 AM UT yesterday, about 24 hours more recent than the past one, so check back for the latest pass info.

PS, my OM worked on the Aegis development back when I was a youngun'

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Weather permitting, there will be a good pass in the Northeast US tonight shortly after 6PM.

Sky will be kind of bright, but it was much brighter than H-A predicted last night, so I would expect it to be brighter than the mag +2.4 they are predicting.

Edit:
Orbit as of 0634 UT yesterday was 245 x 258 km (132 x 139 Nautical miles.)

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I thought today's shot had been cancelled due to rough seas? Obviously not. Well done the US Navy, I have to concede I wasn't that optimistic that they would make the kill.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!
