The KU band width is 50 Mb/s, so an hour would be (3600*50) /8 = 22.5Gbites ish

I loved this part: ""It doesn't mean we are going to forget about it, it doesn't mean we're going to sweep it under the rug, we're not going to start running out of the building with our hair on fire, because we put it down to our flight experience - that's all I'm trying to get across to you."

NASA TV right now reminds me of the first Star Trek movie where they're flying around the Enterprise on the inspection tour. Very serene and pretty.
Slightly off-topic, but I thought the discussion of the launch on BBC radio yesterday had a bit of negative spin. They really emphasised the debris issue, almost suggesting an impending disaster. The announcer had a comment along the lines of 'In typical NASA euphamism, they mentioned several debris-shedding incidents.' How is that a euphamism? It's pretty explicit. And they interviewed an 'expert' who described the Chinese craft as being 'shuttle-class'. I don't know, it jst bugged me a bit.

I think the BBC present to the british public what they expect to hear: drama, drama, drama! So its no wonder then that the public don't know any better. I blame the media for not painting an accurate story... but what can you do?!

All I do is post on the british messageboards and try and explain it to my follow citizens. A lot of them think this shuttle mission is just about space "science", it's not and I find that irritating and a lot of them ask why these "old" shuttles are still flying and have no idea how much work NASA has done in making the shuttles safer or that NASA plans to replace the shuttle for the CEV asap! So its a shame really. But all you can do is tell people, anyways a lot of my posts don't get posted. The editors don't post them. It seems like they only like those ignorant posts with people spounting off about stuff they don't understand and its not just on british boards. Its frustrating sometimes. But hey.

I thought the BBC question was alright for junior school science, but what else can you expect from a media studies graduate?

I heard the BBCNews radio program last night and I had the same impression. They breifly mentioned the launch then went into a 10 minute interview with some guy about how likely the shuttle was going to come crashing down in a ball of flame How negative can they get? Can't they see the big picture here?

College campus reports have better reporting then that! Sad that this network is government funded, they are not getting much for their money.

From the images that were downlinked, it looks like the post SRB-sep debris was from the LOX feedline. Low density stuff that missed the orbiter entirely.

BBC is not goverment funded! The money come from a royal charter. The BBC maybe not as good as the average poster on SDC M&L but their not that bad. Just look at the Sky at night.

So all that TV license taxes the British pay are voluntary?? Nope!

The BBC is funded through an annual government tax on each television in Britain. In fact, it is illegal to own a TV without paying the tax!

Wrong, it is illegal to own a TV that is capable of reciveing BBC in the the UK without paying the TV licence. If don't have a way of reciveing BBC TV you don't have to pay for it.

The BBC gets some things wrong but I'd pay the licence fee for BBC radio 4 and the web content alone. Better that than ITV.

Are there available such TV-sets that can't recieve BBC (but can something else) ??

Here in Finland we have pretty much the same deal with YLE, anyone able to recieve it must pay 200EUR/year licence. I opted not to pay for junk I'm not watching anyway and got rid of TV. Been doing fine without it almost ten years now.

There are ways but it's not easy. Basically you’re just stuck watching pre-recorded material. I'm probably biased but I think the BBC is value for money, they are early to whinge about but they normally get close enough to the mark, normally, the STS seems to be a blind spot for most network reporters, RTF excluded

It's a bit off topic for a STS-114 thread though...

STS-121 and STS-300 have been scrubbed.

If Discovery becomes unsafe for reentry and the crew abandons to ISS. How many Soyuz craft would be needed to rescue the crew?

CNN Breaking News: "NASA grounds the space shuttle progam while engineers determine the effects of debris falling from Discovery during blastoff. More soon."

Soyuz is a three seat craft. I assume it would take a minimum of three Soyuz capsules to recover the entire crew -- but I highly doubt that will be necessary.
NASA did not ground the space shuttle program. All they said is that they won't launch until they understand the debris that came off the PAL ramp. They may well solve the problem way before the next launch window.
