The disaster of Columbia Shuttle earned a lot of criticism to NASA – and Many among the nation raised voices to Shut down NASA itself – While they believed the money being spent on NASA can be used to eliminate poverty and promote education and health care. However President had made it clear, the importance of space missions is equally significant as much as for eliminating poverty, promoting education and health care.

I could be superstitious however Numerology is also important. Space shuttle missions were numbered as STS-1, STS-2 and so on, Whether that was superstition, but somehow STS-13 was avoided.

Several delays in the launch of this Space mission STS 115. four times in two weeks, this time for a faulty fuel tank sensor —I wonder If this Shuttle Crashes would it Crash the future of NASA as well, - ?

/> Liftoff
Shuttle Atlantis finally blasted off, As the Shuttle rises high in the sky - so're the hopes of NASA for completion of International Space Station before the deadline of 2010. May be One day we have New Home under the name of Mars Free of Wars - Free of Terrorism .... So far it's only Free of Human beings and very peacful. - Safe Return of Atlantis will confirm its success of the mission and NASA.

"Conquer the World - is the only choice, I have to make everyday – As I was born to rule"

Poverty isn't going away until countries in poverty fix institutional corruption and allow capital flows across their borders. Healthcare appears to be a black hole, perhaps someone at the GAO should tell the guys at CERN about it.

Education is a nightmare. Giving more money to education would only strengthen the teaching unions and forestall the day when the masses realise that western methods of rote memorisation and standardised testing are borked and no one in a public institution is learning anything.

ScottGreenburg:
and Many among the nation raised voices to Shut down NASA itself – While they believed the money being spent on NASA can be used to eliminate poverty and promote education and health care.

Me:
The flaw in that idea is that the government will somehow take money saved by cutting anything, and put it where it should go. This simply is not going to happen from a government that gave us Watergate and other scandals. That makes any further cuts to NASA a waste in and of itself.

Fact is, after the post Apollo cuts of 1973-74, NASA went from 2 to 4% of the GDP to around 1% GDP. 1% GDP since 1973-74. In effect, NASAs budget has been reduced and maintained at a largely flat level for three plus decades. Where did those savings go? I have seen no elimination of poverty, disease, improvements in health care. What has happened is the Reagan era S&L scandal which cost anywhere from $100 to $500 billion. Deficit spending from 1970 through this year with the exception of 4 years of Clinton surplusses which were wiped out. $100 plus billion annually for the little adventure in Iraq.

Cutting NASAs budget is not the solution. If we can afford $100 billion for the Iraqi people, why not for our own? $100 billion is far more than the $5 or so billion we would save by cutting human spaceflight out altogether.

Someone within NASA may well have invoked superstition in the same way its done with buildings. Buildings 14 or more stories tall have no 13th floor. NASA started its STS-41A etc system just in time to avoid STS-13.

There have been several shuttle missions with multiple delays. Its better to know whats going on and fly safely than to have another accident that results from not delaying. Another accident IMO, will shut the shuttle program down.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. >"I think the original poster was talking about poverty in the US - which is at about 13 % (or some 40 million Americans)."

I was talking about absolute poverty, not being able to afford food and a sheet of corrugated iron for shelter. The poverty in the US is a different kind of poverty and is defined in relative terms. In the US for a single individual, the poverty line is $10,000. For the other 85% of the world outside North America and western Europe this would be considered in the top quartile of earnings.

Sorry, I'm going off-topic here, but the thread's already off....

Incredibly, in Vancouver, BC. there was a newspaper article recently that claimed the poverty line for a family of 4 in Vancouver was at about $43,000/yr!!!!! That's mostly due to the ridiculous cost of housing around here, but most people woud be happy with that income level. Heck, I don't make near that, and I'm now a family of 4 (soon to be 5) about 100 miles away from Vancouver. And I don't think we're living in poverty.

i actually meant the original poster has shown some concern about the safe return infact he meant like if that would ever make it to return or crash like columbia did since there were several problems followed by one after another even before the shuttle launch -- is it just supertition or the original poster actually had some clue about something unseen to happen?
