O.K. I'm only a lowly atom, so help me here.
As I try to wrap my head around this concept of "Fourth Dimensional Space/Time",
I also seem to have difficulty getting a grip on the first 3 Dimensions.
Can someone explain it to me in terms other than Height Width and Length?
Sure. Hold the first two fingers and your thumb of one hand like this:

Your index and middle finger make an "L" to each other. Now your thumb gets in the act, and makes an "L" shape to your index finger. The easiest way to describe it is with your right hand, your index finger points straight up, your middle finger points to the left, and your thumb points at your face.

Now you have three dimensions. "Y" is your index finger pointing up. "X" is your middle finger pointing left, and "Z" is your thumb.

Y is up/down, X is left/right, and Z is depth, "in and out" (when you're in the zero position such as this.)

If you travel up your index finger, Y increases. It decreases as you travel down your finger. Ditto the other Axis. The zero point is where your fingers and thumb all meet.

If you turn your hand upside down, then Y goes negative. If you rotate your hand so that your middle finger points to the right, then X goes up, other wise X goes down.

Now if you rotate your hand, you can see the relationship of how the axis changes in relation to rotation around one or another.

The 4th dimension, traditionally, is time. Time is linear. It goes up, for the most part, but you can reference some prior time. Time is going up as you're playing with your fingers. So we can say that at 16:19:01.00 you were standing in Time Square, New York.

We have an X positon (Longitude), a Y position (Latitude), a Z position (elevation), and a t (4:19pm and 1 second)

The fourth SPACIAL dimension is a different discussion. Get these down pat first...

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

AOD? I thought that quote came from EMH.

hey, are you trying to flash me a gang sign with all those jestures???
I believe it was AoD, aka ED3. The Internet agrees with me. But I'd need to dig 'em all out and watch 'em again. Hrm - not a bad idea.

Yeah, the 3D Modeler's gang sign.

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

You are so right! I confused that quote from something a bit similar in a Star Trek Voyager episode.

"I know your words!"

[[ hey this post evolved me to molecule ]]

Essentially, by altering the relative position of the three fingers, you're really representing changing Eigenvectors.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

We're gonna lose our audience if we go all linear algebra here...

When I'm doing animation and modeling, I still use the visualization technique I mentioned. Ashamedly, far more often than I probably should. It's just such a great visualization tool, IMHOWIOCR

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

So essentially you have Cartesian coordinate system and add a z plane for 3 dimensions or three planes.

So now it has been found that a quantum particle (or wave) has a duplicate somewhere in space. Is that in the same dimensional model (universe) just in another location (position), or is the location in a different dimensional model.

Normally, we say, by analysis, that there are four dimensions, and yet quantum and particle physics demands more, even a least number. So how many dimensional levels are there? Lets not get into multiverses yet, just consider this verse.

If there are, say, 5 dimensions, shouldn't our views of, for example, the electromagnetic spectrum incorporate all of those dimensions? By the way, do we look at the electromagnetic spectrum as having 4 dimensions? We say space-time, but shouldn't it include velocity? Things are more stable at slower speeds.

Is there an event horizon at the speed of light? So that, as something breaks the speed energy is transacted. So that entropy is a highly charged event, like the big bang. Warp speed is controlled entropy, right?

DenniSys.com

By the way, do we look at the electromagnetic spectrum as having 4 dimensions?

Interesting that you say that. Maxwell's ugly little equations become highly simplified in 4 dimensions (actually 4 physical and 1 of time) as a single equation from which they can all be derived. So yes, there is exactly an example of that.

If there are, say, 5 dimensions, shouldn't our views of, for example, the electromagnetic spectrum incorporate all of those dimensions?

Why yes it should. Therefore reference Kaluza-Klein, Yang-Mills, String Theory, and M-Theory. This is exactly what they are doing therein.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

The best explaination of the fourth dimension was given to me by a gentleman who worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, and it was very easy to follow.

If I am holding a party in the Empire state bulding I need to tell you how to get there.

I can tell you it is on 5th Ave (1 Dimension)
Then I can say it is on the corner of 5th Ave at 34th St (2 dimensions)
Further I could say that it is on the observation deck (3rd Dimension)

But if I want you to attend my party I also have to tell you what time to be there. This totals 4 Dimensions I have to give you for you to attend my party.

It was a great explaination given to me in middle school, and I have never forgotten it.

_______________________________

"If you are surrounded by those who constatly agree with you, then you're in an intellectual vacuum. If you feel like trying to make a difference, you have to BE different. How can you do that without interacting with those who are different from yourself?"

- a_lost_packet_

Wick07,
O.K. So if i say:
5th ave. (photon)
5th & 34th (polarity)
observation deck: (nuclear force, neutrons)
time: (that which is created, affected by the 3 lower dimensions)
anyone?

Mindmute, don't forget that the universe may exist in as many as 11 dimensions! According to string theory. So, if you're having trouble with 4 dimensions, I better not get into anything with 11

Adrenalynn did a good job at explaining 3 dimensions using X,Y, and Z, rather than saying up/down, left/right, backwards/forwards. Einstein believed that time must exist in a 4th dimension that is intertwined with space, basically meaning that one can't exist without the other.

With no space, time's existence is pointless, and with no time, space cannot exist/evolve. It takes time for space to manifest itself.

String theory and quantum physics suggest that things are not always what they seem in the universe. Just because we think that there can only be 3 spatial dimensions, does not mean that there aren't many more.

Techies: We do it in the dark.

"Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. "

beware when your signature is deeper than what you post above it

/oh my, I thought it was your signature

"String theory and quantum physics suggest that things are not always what they seem in the universe. and vanDivX:

That is sort of like saying there is no history because you haven't read it. Space-Time as a dimension is pretty solid scientifically. Nothing is absolute.

You could think that entropy created the universe. Along with creation came possibility, and with that the possibility of thought, and with that God and the angels. Probably 'what' is stranger than we can think, but we have to start our thinking from some verifiable point because that is reasonable. We do that using the Scientific Method. We do the best we can; not the least. Not to give understanding the universe our best effort is to forsake wisdom.

DenniSys.com

O.K. I'm only a lowly atom, so help me here. LOL
ok so theres such things as complex as 13th dimension?
a dimension only applies toward like one system, the solar system is like the 4th dimension?

oh, GOD!!!!!!!!!! nooo my brain's going to blow up!
