What about Clarke's "Earthshine"? It's got everything, a detective story, intrigue, a dareing space rescue, and an absolute stormer of a space battle at the climax.

Dan Simmons "Hyperion" series.
Richard Morgan "Altered Carbon"/not the series, as he grows little too political in the later parts/
Hyperion/Endyminion are excellent SciFi - they would make lousy movies. Of the four, only Hyperion would make a decent movie, the others are too cerebral and not visceral enough.

It's not exactly *science* fiction, but SF and fantasy are so closely related that I don't feel incorrect in listing these.

"The Black Cauldron" series (all five books, although "Taran Wanderer" might prove difficult)

It was done as a Disney cartoon, but they botched it big-time. It was less true to the source than the infamous Ralph Bakshi version of "The Lord of the Rings" was. The animation was extremely good, of course, but if you've read the books, you know the story only moderately resembles the book. (It's actually mostly based on "The Book of Three", the first book in the series, with a few scattered bits of "The Black Cauldron".)

"The Dark is Rising" series (all five books; never been attempted to my knowledge)

These are aimed at the Harry Potter set, but are more subtle. These harken more to ancient British legends and myths. It would be relatively inexpensive, as it takes place (for the most part) in the modern world. If only one of the books were done, it should be "Dark is Rising" (the second one), because it is the best of the series (even won the Newberry Alcott Award) and does the best job of standing alone.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Well, I WOULD put "Riverworld" here, but just the other night, I saw the pile of excrement that someone made, and pretended was "Riverworld"

I can't understand, how they kept so many PARTS of the story, and yet produced something so very unlike the story, is it some evil genius that Hollywood excells in?.

I saw the opening of that show that night. It seemed different with all of the different time framed people there on the same beach, and headed for what they did not know. But I was not able to stay for much more then those few minutes.
I have said this before and don't want to press the point much, but a favorite book to make up would be "Sphere" by Crichton. They attempted to do it with a great cast of actors and characters some years back, but any simularities after that is purely imaginary. It did not last at the show more then a few weeks, and when I rented it I was so disgusted I have YET to watch it all in one sitting. That is one of the few books I have read at least twice, and have it on book tape which I have listened to several more times. It is really a shame to do that to such a good book.

Don't know what anyone could do with a little book called Bored of the Rings. It was written, the author writes, with one hand on a pen, and the other holding a copy of the copyright laws so he wouldn't get sued. But that was back in the dark ages when I was in college as a youngster, and I don't remember much more then that he played on their names and situations a whole lot, and I must have thought it was something fun to have remembered it all these years.

P.S. I told one of the girls at the factory I'm at about your comments about little ole ladies and their wrinkled butterflies and barbed wire tatoos, and she said that was why she never wanted one. Just think about those wrinkled butterflies and all, agh!

lol. Was it a GOOD LOOKING GIRL, this one at your factory?.

I shouldn't like to think of you talking about me to just ANY old female, like some fat ugly chick. Come on mate, fair dos, i wouldn't talk about YOU, to my cousin Heta.

Besides, they will just explain them away " That isn't a wrinkled flower on my butt, it is an engineering pattern for a replacement ringpiece * "

* you know, like quality mens shirts have a spare button sewed into the collar.

Brain Wave, I have the book and have read it so many times that I have lost count. The only thing is, I liked the Martian Chronicles too, and it was made into a movie and it was terrible. Some stories aren't meant to be made into movies, I guess.

Is that where they had "Cat-tails" and Dicta immortality, little short legged lions, Immortal children/geniuses, displacement booths for cell gunk, and an orgy thrown in too?.

I likey !. Loved the image of the house defense robot trying the space-ship on in a gun battle, then fleeing for its "life", hollering for the coppers that had been gone for centuries.

Yes, excellent story, jammed full of ideas. Please Great Dog, Hollywood never gets its twisted raping mitts on that excellent story. I dread to thing of what an abortion would ensue.

How about letting Peter Jackson collaborate with Pixar to make a motion picture of Harvard Lampoons' parody, BORED OF THE RINGS ?

Lo, the enemy aproaches......

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

One of his would be a MASSIVE success, and that would be "Gift from Earth"

So easy to make it in CGI, with the view off Mount Lookatthat being the only thing you would have to mock up.

And topical too, with the stem cell debate, and the like.

He really is the one for great ideas of social change. One of my favorite authors, except for how he slavishly followed the baying pack that attacked P.J.Farmer for his "porn" novels. So much for being a man of the future.
Some might not call it true sci-fi, but Song of Distant Earth would make a good movie.

How about The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It might take a lot of work to make it into a film and I don’t think the US would take on such subject matter at the moment. Shame because it could really be worth the effort.

Its not a novel per say, but Warhammer 40 000 universe could be a very good movie. With todays special effects movie could be really good, done by Peter Jackson and it could be excellent.
