It's not exactly *science* fiction, but SF and fantasy are so closely related that I don't feel incorrect in listing these.

"The Black Cauldron" series (all five books, although "Taran Wanderer" might prove difficult)

It was done as a Disney cartoon, but they botched it big-time. It was less true to the source than the infamous Ralph Bakshi version of "The Lord of the Rings" was. The animation was extremely good, of course, but if you've read the books, you know the story only moderately resembles the book. (It's actually mostly based on "The Book of Three", the first book in the series, with a few scattered bits of "The Black Cauldron".)

"The Dark is Rising" series (all five books; never been attempted to my knowledge)

These are aimed at the Harry Potter set, but are more subtle. These harken more to ancient British legends and myths. It would be relatively inexpensive, as it takes place (for the most part) in the modern world. If only one of the books were done, it should be "Dark is Rising" (the second one), because it is the best of the series (even won the Newberry Alcott Award) and does the best job of standing alone.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
