Unfortunately, there are too many people with too much time on their hands
with not enough to do.

Hence we get this sort of pseudoscientific conspiracy nonsense on an all too regular basis.

This is partly the reason why science in the western world MUST be taken more
seriously in schools, colleges etc.

I am awaiting the first alien anomaly to be found on Mercury by MESSENGER. I am sure
someone with too much time & is bored is going to post some crap along those lines.

Back to 2007 TU24, I really hope some good science has come from this encounter.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Yeah, I can see your point completely.

But it is kinda cool to poke fun at things that some people would say "will devestate the earth".

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
(I hope I got that saying right....Otherwise, I just made myself look like a total idiot.xD)

"If it's planned, it's boring." - Freddie Mercury

More educational info:

Why are the results published by NEODyS not the same as those published by Sentry? (MW: the JPL site results)
The differences between the two systems are generally not substantial, and in some sense they are reassuring. Independent systems using different software and theoretical approaches are not expected to produce the same results from statistical searches. Experience has shown that there is excellent agreement between the two systems for the more serious potential collision detections.
One of the differences between the two systems stems from different approaches to computing the impact probability. This computation is rough by its very nature, and different techniques may be used; impact probabilities different by a factor of ten or so are not extraordinary.

Another important variation is that Sentry uses a different sampling strategy, one that should detect nearly all potential impacts with probability greater than 10-8 (1 in 100 million), and does not expend much effort pursuing less likely cases, although it may find some anyway. In any case, nothing with impact probability below 10-10 (1 in 10 billion) is published by Sentry. In contrast, NEODyS may not detect as many potential impacts at probabilities below 10-6 (1 in 1 million), but in certain cases it can detect very low probability events that Sentry does not.

from: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/doc/sentry_faq.html

But the Krell forgot one thing John. It's about +14.5 now.

We are still examining the photos, may have a few crappy images. We were beset by technical problems, and had never really attempted anything this time intensive in the past.

I'll let you know, I think we got a few really lousy images.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Nothing from me yet. I have a couple nights of decent weather, but I'm not really thinking about dragging the scope out if it's like Mag 20 or something...

.

bipartisan (bī-pär'tĭ-zən, -sən) [Adj.] Maintaining the ability to blame republications when your stimulus plan proves to be a devastating failure.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Ah, yes, I see how that would be quite cumbersome if all you were to see was a little faded dot....xD

Well, I hope you and MW get/have gotten some good images!

"If it's planned, it's boring." - Freddie Mercury

Well, while an obvious farce, it still may have bothered the poster or Phil, since it left a lot of room for the woo-woos.

Who of course undobtedly have seized upon it by now.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. You know I have heard of a million "close" aproachs and none have ever hit! Why is it the numbers are normally wrong? OH NO is Wd5 going to hit mars and then have the debris hit Earth and wipe us out? I don't think so I mean if it were to happen wouldn't it be in the Bible?

Actually the numbers are not wrong at all. There are close approches. They happen, depending on how you define close.
And one in a million possible impacts. That means that 999,999 out of 1.000,000 times they will miss, which is exactly what happens.

The odds for 2007WD5 were ~ 1 in 25,000, which means that 24.999 out of 25,000 times with the smae odds, it would be expected to miss, which it did.

People really don't understand odds at all, sadly.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Oh and BTW, you haven;'t heard about a "million" close approaches.
