What the cylons have been after and what there plan is has been kinda obvious since the pilot when Adama said to the cylon on ragnorok station "God didn't make the Cylons, we did, and I don't recall us giving them souls."

The cylons became conscious and realized they did not have souls, That's why love is important for making human cylon hybrids. It's not about a human reproductive system, or even killing all humans, Cylons want to have souls.

Of course I hope the writers agree with my frivolous conjecture on the motivations of fictional non human androids.

Some loose thoughts ....

RE: suffocation of the Cylon prisoners ... definitely a faux pas on the writer's part. C'mon now, why wouldn't they have been waiting to kill them on a seconds notice. Sounds like piss poor military planning. And minor point, why shoot them ? Why not dump them overboard or gas them or stick a needle in them ? I'd think you'd want to avoid shooting inside a spaceship.

RE: Moralizing over genocide ... Helo's point about his Sharon/Athena being different from the rest is true. We've seen other "skin jobs" debating what course of action is best, they are not wholly monolithic in their thinking. So the question is along the lines of whether it's moral to muke an entire city to kill the baddies and accepting that others will die as well.

RE: Adama's naivety ... I didn't read it quite the same way as the above. I sort of got the sense it was more like the regrets of someone who, in-restrospect, might have done something differently had the consequences be fully appreciated beforehand. How would you feel if something you had done, even if by accident, had instigated the deaths of billions of people.

Lastly we were planted with the seed that the Cylons nonchalance wrt to the material death of their bodies may come to an end. The preacher Cyclon (Cavil ?) remarked on how painful it was to be re-incarnated for the 3'rd time. I wonder how this will inter-twine with the germ warfare angle. Will the loss of imortality change the way Cylons look at life and humans ? Will we see larger schisms in their ranks re: the "human problem"and are humans just an annoyance now on the road to (new home world) Earth ?

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

way too gloomy, I was never a huge fan of the original series but I'm beginning to understand why the purists hated the new Galactica so much

GalacticHalo,
Are you kidding me? The darker the better. I'm sick of "everthing working out at the end" crap we get fed most of the time...Imho the writting is excellent. Many times, like the current discussion, there are no "right decisions". Everything isn't black and white, more like reality.

Speaking of reality, everyone get the "insurgent reference" in the New Caprica episodes? First thing I thought of was Iraq, and the old quote..."One man's insurgent, is another man's freedom fighter".
Oh yea, and the special effects are pretty good.
but to each their own...

                            www.watchnasatv.com

                          ONE PERCENT FOR NASA!

I understand the need to make commentary on society, current events, war, leaders et cetera. It has been done many times in the past by notable fictional writers and film directors. I like how the physics of the ships are grounded in reality unlike those films by Lucas and some of the epiodes were very well done and the acting by James Olmos and Mary McDonnell was wonderful.

I can't recall much of the original as I wasnt a big fan but my problem with the new BGS is that its oftentimes just too glum or dark and some of the characters are just full of despair. The treasonous Gaius getting tortured, Tigh addicted to drink and Starbuck being a female isn't the real problem she's a foul mouthed brute who gets into drunken brawls with the ship's XO, is she a still going to be stab at PC-ism and is it any wonder the after-ellen website called her an 'honorary ****'. I don't dislike the new Galactica - it is well produced, the special effects are good and there's some fine acting. My problem is it just seems a bit too dark and glum and lost a lot of good things the original had.

Oh please, the original BSG was cheesy as hell. The only thing that could have added to the cheese factor would've been to throw in that stupid robot from Buck Rogers.

Yes but if I'm correct in my supposition that the cylons want to have souls then that would explane the cylons unwillingness to completely exterminate the human race.

The cylons god massmind must be greatly conflicted, at one time wishing to have a soul and yet having to allow for autonomy in what are basically extensions of it's body to achieve that end. It must be like having a hand with a mind of it's own.

Oh boy, the Hand of Jupiter episode was the best in weeks. Only 36 days (22 January 2007) to wait. Damn, I hate waiting when they get this good!

eh...I could do without the whole "crimson tide" drama. Authorize use of nuclear weapons....I'd swear they just launched the nucs before...w/out the open doors....missles locking into place etc. Oh well, it was great seeing Adama and Roslyn tell of the clyons face to face.

Side note: Baltar as the "good guy" Is he introducing jealousy into the cylons emotional repetior? I think this could really mess with them.

                            www.watchnasatv.com

                          ONE PERCENT FOR NASA!

I wonder if they will ever introduce the beings of light like in the first series or will they ever run into other races at all.

Yes. Its looking like the Universe - or at least this quadrant of the Galaxy - is a very lonely place. It would appear the Drake equation is invalid?

^^ Good point - yes probably the mass (under educated) media interpretation of the equation. Yes in does depend on the assumptions one plugs into the parametres.

N = R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L

I'd be quite happy if humanity was alone in our galaxy. The "Rare Earth" hypothesis is as good as it gets, in my opinion. I guess it depends on your perspective.

If you believe in evolution then you must surely believe we are not alone in the universe. To assume that out of the billions of stars that exist only one single solitary planet developed life is illogical. To insist that we are alone in the universe plays into the creationists "God created the world" system.

Yes, the idea of humankind being alone and thus the first is appealing. We could be the progenitors of intelligence across the Galaxy. Our first success (or failure) is AI (Cylons). Maybe the Earthers have had better success and are now in the process of UPLIFTING biological beings?

*generic end-of-thread post*

I was at the SciFi network BSG website finding out when the next episode was out, and happened to notice a Microsoft ad that said "Cylons: Why Debugging Matters"

I got my wife interested in BSG, so while we watched from the beginning to the latest episodes I've had to completely avoid the Science Fiction Forum so as not to see season 3 spoilers. So excuse me while I chime in on some older episodes.

Specifically, Exodus pt 2. Like, WOW! Absolutely spectacular effects, especially Galactica jumping into the atmosphere and free-falling for a while. Now is that a textbook maneuver, or did Adama dream that up himself? Pegasus jumping to the rescue and sacrificing itself was completely predictable, but well worth the effects there.

Speaking of which, while seeing the battlestars surrounded by fireballs is rather cool, it's disappointing not to see any debris or pieces breaking off in the explosions. I guess it's just supposed to be the blast/vibrations/concussion that does the damage.

Can't wait for the next one on the 21st! Well, probably the 23rd by the time I download it, burn it, and get a chance to watch it.

Ok, here is my prediction for the new season opener. Adamma launches his nukes, but, the target package slams them into the BAase-Stars. Only one get's away with the Sharon-brat hybrid and the usuals. Baltar and the suicide monkey are safely enroute to the planet. Galactica collects the EOJ, Baltar spies on the EOJ or gets enough data to figure it out. The race is on, but the single Base Star cannot come back until the Galactica leaves without support. Now here is the cool part. The Cylons that try to take the temple loose and Baltar gets captured. He is shown the Eye of Jupiter but the humans execute him. But, Baltar is a Cylon and that is how he finds out for sure.

They've started airing the first season over here (Holland), so I will be avoiding this thread to prevent me from reading any spoilers, but I have to say, that for me it's the best sci-fi show since Star Trek TNG. Quite enjoyable.

***

Great episode tonight. Galactica managed to escape with quite a lot of baggage.

But who are the Five damn it?

Wait one ****-a-doodie minute! I thought they launched the nukes last episode. Launch means whoosh-boom! I had no idea they would go "strike match", "move match to rocket", "light fuse" minutia. I am dissapointed that they took the easy out. But, I'll get over it because it was EXCELLENT!!!
Lucy rocks. I share your disappointment. Still, overall the show is excellent and I'll continue watching.

I hope that we'll see Lucy Lawless again soon, beyond the singing numbers (which I also enjoyed ).

Oh, yes, a most excellent episode.

I'm thinking that the 5 unknown Cylons will somehow help D'Anna out of her predicament.

Will number 6 and Baltar share a Cell - interesting dynamics .

take a look at the trailer on scifi.com/battlestar.

...
...

...

I'm gonna say what you see at the very end of the trailer in a few more lines...

....
..

...

Okay, that should be enough warning. Also, this may very well be a out of context shot, as they like to mess with us sometimes with these trailers:

The last few seconds or so, after baltar has been interrogated by BSG, to be sitting up from a Cylon ressurection tank, being greeted by 2 #6's.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
